The organs of people killed in road accidents and such like are not viable because of the time lapse between death and and being able to harvest them they have become ischeamic and such like because of depravation of oxygen. So at the minute the only organs that can be harvested are from people who have died whilst in hospital on life support or who have had a an accident and being taken to hospital before death.
Two independant consultants have to proclaim that a person is braindead before a machine can be turned off. This is the time when the co ordinators have to ask families re donorship. I can only imagine the feeling going through their heads at this time pls God it will never be a situation i will ever be in …….but this where the card and register stating the donors wishes are brought to light.
Hence the necessity of letting your family know of your wishes. This would work the same way in the *opt out* system. The donors wishes would be known thus saving valuable time re the organ and indeed another episode of emotional stress for the family at the time
Sorry chess, you’re right, I meant those that were involved in road traffic accidents who then later died in hospital. And yes, it would work well if people let families know, but it is still a difficult thing for both hospital staff and the families to have to discuss at such a terribly sad time.
17 January, 2008 at 6:07 pm #304182In this country, when someone dies in say a road traffic accident, the doctors and nurses have to see if they can find a donor card, and if they can’t find one, ask the relatives (who would be understandably distraught) if they could harvest organs. So not as many organs are harvested for donation as if we used the system they use in some other countries in Europe.
For example, in Holland, Belgium, Germany and I think France, organs are automatically harvested unless the deceased has specifically asked that they are not taken, or if the family immediately state that they don’t want that to happen. They therefore have far more organs available for transplant than we do.
There are always stringent guidelines for who gets organs that have been donated, as chess has said. It really does depend on whether your tissue types match etc. But if there are more organs available, the chances of getting a good match increase.
17 January, 2008 at 6:01 pm #302179This apparently is a “common” occurrence in Portugal. Lots of small children go missing and are never found again. A thriving white slave trade to North Africa? Possibly. A paedophile ring involving other countries using Portugal because of their ineffective policing methods etc? Probably.
Whether the McCanns had anything to do with Maddie’s disappearance or not, the fact remains that a lot of children have gone missing over time, it is not an isolated incident. So the question remains, why haven’t the combined police forces from all the countries involved managed to work out where they are being taken?

I read the news today oh, boy
About a lucky man who made the grade
And though the news was rather sad
Well, I just had to laugh
I saw the photograph
He blew his mind out in a car
He didn’t notice that the lights had changed
A crowd of people stood and stared
They’d seen his face before
Nobody was really sure
if he was from the House of LordsI saw a film today oh, boy
The English army had just won the war
A crowd of people turned away
But I just had to look
Having read the book
I love to turn you on.Woke up, got out of bed
dragged a comb across my head
Found my way downstairs and drank a cup
and looking up, I noticed I was late
Found my coat and grabbed my hat
Made the bus in seconds flat
Found my way upstairs and had a smoke
Somebody spoke and I went into a dream
AhhhhI read the news today oh, boy
Four thousand holes in Blackburn, Lancashire
And though the holes were rather small
They had to count them all
Now they know how many holes
it takes to fill the Albert Hall
I’d love to turn you on13 January, 2008 at 4:36 pm #302164But if this is engineered by spin doctors, then maybe the McCanns are being manipulated so others can make loads of money out of a tragedy.
This society becomes more americanised by the day.

I would prefer free range or organic but it’s down to cost. When my local supermarket sell’s caged eggs at £1:09 and free range at £2:04 I’m not going to pay it.
Also what I don’t understand is in the 50’s and 60’s most food was free range or organic and there was a premium on the new frozen food that was introduced to the food market because it was new and convenient . Now we seem to be paying a premium on the natural food what we used to have back in the 50’s and 60’s.
When British farmers were producing to much food and we had huge milk lakes and thousands of tons of potatoes the price didn’t fall, the government still kept the price up
It’s all about greedy supermarkets and greedy governments. That is a very good point! Now I don’t remember quite that far back, but I do know that when I was a child we bought all our fruit and veg from a grocers who were supplied locally. We had to eat what was in season. Meat came from a local butcher. Most of these have been put out of business by the supermarket chains who undercut them, waited until they had closed down and then put their prices up to more than the local stores charged. People say they like the convenience of being able to get everything in one place, but the competition is just between the big supermarket chains now, and they do deals. They ship produce in from all over the world because people like being able to get fruit and veg out of season, but this contributes to global warming.
There are now farm shops, and farmers markets. The farmers are trying to carry on supplying us locally. Yes it is more expensive, but Smiles is right, it is more tastey, and you know where its come from. I think the government should be encouraging this and giving the farmers subsidies so they can reduce their prices, thereby making it possible for all the local people to buy from the farmers directly. But this brings its own problems, as increased demand for local produce might be impossible to meet.
Surely it would be preferable if the supermarkets all bought their produce from the farmers in this country, and wherever possible from farmers local to each supermarket, or as locally as possible. If fruit and veg are out of season, then we could have the option of buying products from abroad, or just to eat what is in season.

Absolutely right Minim … and the McCann spin doctoring team are well aware of this fact too.
Probably this is why they are desperately trying to keep this story alive in the Media by issuing an assortment of stories specifically designed to get the Media’s attention.
OK they say it is to assist in the hunt for Maddie …. but I sometimes wonder if they REALLY believe that she is still alive. Not many other people seem to believe this and in fact the generally held view (including my own) is that the McCanns had a major part to play in her ”disappearance”.
Of course there are those who claim that because there is no ”proof” and they are ”innocent until proved guilty” the McCanns are simply acting as ‘normal’ parents would in wanting to find their child.
But as time goes by and there are STILL no sightings (or anything else) of Maddie …. doubts continue to grow.
Until placed in this terrible situation, how do any of us know how we personally would react. We have seen others in similar situations react totally differently to the McCanns. That does not mean that they are guilty of having murdered their own daughter, or of accidentally killing her and hiding the evidence. Their desperation to find their daughter is in the spotlight because of the intrusion for good or bad of the media. This is most certainly the age of Big Brother (and I mean the book).
13 January, 2008 at 10:58 am #302159The journalists who write this stuff say they give a balanced view of events, but all news is sensationalist these days. The more controversial the better. Happy and bland doesn’t sell.
A sports bag goes missing, and it is large enough to have hidden a child. The appartment is owned by someone called McCann, but no relative. There has been no progress in finding Maddie. That is really all they say.
The Media will always be able to manipulate public opinion. It is up to the public to recognise that they are being swayed.
