I would guess as the POSH (Port Out Starboard Home) was refering to the money people who would avoid the sun by always sitting at the Northern side of the ship whilst sailing to and from the East Indies. They, would probably not require a ticket and be acknowledged merely by their status.

Surely the “POSH” cabins were on the southern (sunny) side of the ship
