‘Black’ people are less than 14% of the US population, so even if everyone voted – which they don’t of course – with 86% of the possible black vote, The idea that:
Obama’s ‘dirty trick’ efforts went into getting less than 11% of the votes; that
all those voters voted with their complexions rather than on information or principle; and
that the other (for argument’s sake) 40% of the votes he needed just ‘happened’, or were any more hoodwinked than Romney’s voters
makes Obama more lucky than dirty.
In my opinion, the ‘blackness’ of Obama’s appeal and the ‘whiteness’ of Romney’s appeal says a lot about how many Americans – and evidently at least one English person – assume that the interests (and reasons for voting) of ‘black’ people and of ‘white’ people are fundamentally different. It’s tragic.

Not just by Muslims, More than a few Christian preachers said that the attack on the Twin Towers was God’s punishment for New York’s depravity, they might as well have said “The Terrorists are right”
7 November, 2012 at 12:17 pm #513819Government guidelines are that speed cameras should be visible from a reasonable distance (specified for different speed limits) and the speed limit indicated. However lack of visibility is not a legal defence against a speeding ticket.
While high speed collisions are more likely to be fatal, I wonder at the stupid, bullying behaviour of drivers at high speed such as those who would drive ridiculously close behind the car in front and flash their lights rather than overtake when the outside lane is available and clear. Or drive close behind, overtake, pull in front and then slow down. I’m neither immune to the lure of speed, nor impressed by the prevalence of stupidity amongst drivers.
7 November, 2012 at 11:40 am #514117I’ve had bus drivers be rude and aggressive to me on occasions. There have been times when I’ve been convinced it was racist, and other times when I thought I was just another victim of an ignoramus.
Would I ride his bus? Of course! My refusal wouldn’t change his views, but would inconvenience me. I hardly ever have any idea what the political views are of those providing me with services and have probably been caused more personal misery by members of other parties or none, but life’s a bit of a lottery isn’t it?
It’s ironic that a BNP member would use human rights/European based legislation, which their party has committed themselves to repealing.
7 November, 2012 at 9:15 am #513930For me a wonderful result for all kinds of reasons and I think symbolically and pragmatically it will be the best thing for America.
To think at this point after the last Election, some people – even professed supporters, even in JC – were predicting that he wouldn’t be allowed to live out his first year as president, let alone survive politically. But America has decided that he should be their president for as long as possible.
Wonderful!

The celebrity fashion for naming babies after the place in which they were conceived would, I believe, have me named Hampstead – I’m glad my parents didn’t adopt it as it might have been a burden as a kid in Hackney . . .
