I’ve been asked to share some more so heres a short story I wrote for a friend during their mid life crisis …. they saw the point of it – I hope you do!!!!

This is the story of Frodo … he’s a frog, but not just any frog – a very special frog indeed …

You see – as the fairy tales tell us, if we kiss enough frogs, eventually one will turn into a Prince and all of us Princesses will live happily ever after! Bullshyte!

You see every little girl is a Princess – no matter how she looks, how she speaks, where she comes from – the people that love her make her a Princess. Now as with most things in life – sometimes – things are just never ‘quite enough’ and some Princesses just can’t be happy.

Anyway – Frodo …. he’s a frog … which I already mentioned – but he isn’t just any frog, no, not at all. He’s a magical frog. He has special powers you see … they aren’t visible to the naked eye. You can’t see them – ever. But you can feel them! He’s the darkest green, his feet are webbed, he has warts all over, by any stretch of the imagination – he’s possibly THE ugliest frog you ever could see. And like every other frog, Frodo has a huge mouth. HUGE I tell you. But nothing like any other frogs. His is turned upwards – almost like a smile!

Whenever I see Frodo, and his ‘smile’ it makes me want to smile! Not only me – anyone who comes into contact with him. This is part of his gift – what makes him magical. No matter how sad, angry, upset you are … Frodo’s smile melts that away and leaves you feeling happy. This in turn makes him happy. Thus making his smile wider – it truly is a fabulous sight.

No one would ever know from looking at Frodo that he hides a very magnificent story. You see … he gave up his chance of becoming a Prince way back. Oh… he got kissed by many Princesses (more than most I think!) and eventually became someone’s Prince …. But the powers that be – declared Frodo must not give up his gift in order to become a ‘real’ Prince!

The ruling stated that he gave so many Princesses joy with his magical powers that he must remain a frog for all eternity. Frodo accepted this … He was happy to be Mrs Frodo’s Prince in his form of a frog and she accepted and loved him as such! Life was good … Frodo was proud of his gift and accepted that it was for the best that he remained as is ….. He was happy and as such, his happiness was shared by many.

Then one day, out of the blue – Frodo met a Princess. A very pretty Princess indeed. She was the most beautiful of all and he worshipped her from afar. She in turn took an interest in Frodo – she felt the happiness he created around her. She also saw that many others around Frodo felt the same. In typical Princess style – she began to think that IF she kissed Frodo and he became her Prince – ALL of the happiness would become hers – the PRINCE OF HER DREAMS – she would be the happiest Princess that ever was.

She put on her best gown, pinned up her hair before placing her most expensive tiara upon her head and she sat by the brook and waited for Frodo. She knew he would come, she saw the way he looked at her. It was only a matter of time before he would be her Prince – a ‘real’ Prince and she would have all the happiness in the world.

Every time Frodo would pass she would beckon him over, make small talk, flutter her eyelashes, drape a daisy chain around his neck, he was beginning to feel like a ‘real’ Prince and he was loving it. Then one day as the two sat by the little river… the glorious sun shining down – they leant, closer and closer – till their lips touched gently! Magic happened in that moment ….. and when the Princess opened her eyes – there before her was her Prince…… Prince Frodo, in human form.

Now …. watching all this from above were the elders – they were not at all happy. They knew that both the Princess and Frodo had acted out of selfishness and decided to take action. They took away Frodo’s gift. Neither him nor the Princess were aware of this …. but it all became apparent very soon. Frodo’s smile became smaller and smaller as the days passed. The Princess became less happy too. Neither were content as they once was – in the days when they worshipped from afar. It all became too much. Frodo left the palace – a very sad Prince indeed. The Princess set about finding another Prince.

Frodo realised what he has done. He had been selfish and he must speak to the elders to make amends. If only he could be a frog again…. if only he could go back to how it was … before Princesses and kisses. To Mrs Frodo and his gift.

He spoke to the elders later that day … he put forward his case. Apologised for his actions and begged of them… ‘Please let me become a frog again and I will never again act as I did’. After much whispering and a few raised eyebrows the elders came to a decision – Frodo was always a far better frog than he ever was a human. With the swish of a wand …… he was once again the little green frog everyone loved ….. however something was missing…. his once upturned mouth was now no different to that of any other frog. The elders hadn’t returned his gift! It was punishment for giving it away so easily.

Now Frodo.. has returned to his lily pad in the pond … but he isn’t special. He’s a frog… plain and simple – like every other frog that ever was…. only sadder. He was once THE KING OF FROGS – he didn’t wear a crown – he didn’t have to. People loved him for how he made them feel. And in return – they made him feel like a KING! The Princess was gone, Mrs Frodo was gone, all the people who shared his gift, were gone.

Sometimes it’s better to be a FROG in reality than a PRINCE only in someone’s dreams!
