I agree that to a large extent, it is the tutor and his/her approach to teaching that has perhaps changed more-so than the examinations/papers. Some people might hastily put forward the notion that, of course the results will be better from private run organisations, when their very existence relies upon them.

So, if our kids are achieving record results every year why is it that with each new crop of bright young things that start their working career at my place of employment seem dumber than the last?

Usually they are at university and work part time to keep them in beer and fags. I have the misfortune to encounter them when I start on the night shift as they, being part time, are on the backshift.

I can honestly say, hand on heart, that as each year passes the youngsters that flood onto the job market get dumber and dumber as well as lazier and lazier.

He said, as he fills the shelf again…

Making such a comment of course, can only be truly qualified when a deep independent research has taken place. With the level of intelect shown by mr quiet on these boards, his comment above would appear to ring true in comparison. I put the laziness down soley to the knock out chit these kids are smokin….Trust me, i know…

Perhaps Mr Quiet’s bitterness is down to envy that he didn’t make do better during his time at school.

I honestly think that teaching standards have improved – I am speaking from experience here.

Gone has the talk and chalk method with kids passively copying down what is written on the board.

Teaching these days is much more interactive and learner focused encouraging participation. Resources and equipment are better as well.

You have to also consider that kids with learning difficulties are now getting the help they need instead of being cast aside as thick. This means they stay in education and achieve better grades.

Mr Quiet is not only decrying the achievements of the kids but the achievements of the teachers as well.

I dont think A levels have got easier, but as tinkerbell rightly said kids of today seem streamed differently to how we were. Common Sense does appear to have taken a back seat in many cases and numerous life skills have been lost. And yes this includes work ethics, communication, respect and manual labour in alot of cases. I agree with whoever said i think it could be somewhat to do with the fact schools are judged on academic results, and maybe kids are pushed more. I know when i was a kid having the odd day here and there off during harvest time was the norm, whereas now its frowned upon more, holidays during term time also frowned upon. So yes maybe things have got alot more academic focused, even your once seen as manual, possibly apprentice based subjects have exam options they once didnt. I dont really know enough about the education system to say, but i still think alot not all kids have the wrong attitudes nowadays and indeed do act like lazy arse retards when in employment they see as beneath them, this isnt because they are stupid at all, quite the opposite.
That said no amount of A* are going to prepare them for the reality of an adult working world and no i dont think it is acceptable to say its ok once they reach about 30 they’ll grow up and start performing. As i said earlier, with the country as it is they are going to get a shock when just turning up doing a bit is going to be enough, employers are going to want need and rightly, expect more for their money.

Why do some people think things were so much better in “their day?”

Why do some people think they lived in the “golden age?”

I doubt very much if either poli or QM lived in the golden age of education. I doubt if anyone did. You make do with what is available at the time just like every generation has to.

You cannot apply what happened 30 years ago and try and make it relevant today. Times change, things evolve, everything does unless of course, you live in the countryside. :D

Just to clarify, i never said it was better i said it was different, and it was, somethings have changed for the better others for the worse. And good manners, work ethics, respect should never have anyting to do with what era you live in, they should be the main stay of education from the minute they are born and carried through the school years both at home and at school, discipline has suffered in schools and homes with the ever increasing nanny state, this in my opinion actually makes it harder for these youngsters when they reach adult hood and the working world. We can’t expect kids to be able to know how to discipline themselves if they have spent their first 18 years not having to learn about it. And as important as the academic side is, it isnt the be all and end all of education, life is an education and in many ways we dont prepare our youngsters enough for it. This i must add doesnt apply to all.

It`s always the same isn`t it people? Money, money, money, and then people put labels on groups ” skilled ” ……” un-skilled ” etc, and what comes with pound signs and labels ? I will let you know, it`s values…..Next thing, some person will be telling me the people on benefits are human, with feeliings and feel humiliation and sorrow exactly the same as anybody else. Quite frankly, if you believe that living in a set up that watches what you do for vast amounts of your day, can subject you to various forms of systematic, automatic non-sense, impose quotas on various ” independent ” public services, allow statutes that will give you an option to pay yourself out of court or be damned…… Oh, did i mention about the times i didn`t vote ?
I ask myself, in recent years the world has been bombarded with the digital revolution with it`s pros and cons, why on earth would the government stop funding IT training but… be content to pay over 1oo pounds pw to a private company, to impose quotas on each of their ” clients ” { me and you }….. And thats a minimum figure, As they say across the pond…Go figure !

Another example, people have been locked up for weeks, months and years for refusing to obey an instruction or demand for money ie, not having a tv licence…. dont make me laugh…. the cost of locking that person up as a criminal in prison exceeds the the licence fee many times over… Yes, i know exactly what some of these kids would say, it wont be ” what does value mean ” :)

i agree to an extent gaz, but i dont think its down to the government to be responible for teaching kids value, whether it be monetary or moral values that is down to the parents, teachers, their immediate guides in life.
It is too easy to blame the government for every single thing that fails in all honesty where we should in actual fact look at ourselves. Yes the government make mistakes, much like parents do i guess, but ultimately the buck starts and stops with a child educator whether thats home or school.

One of the biggest forms of childrens education is parental, including genetic traits…. The problem is i think, and btw, lay the responsibilty upon the parents/guardian. They have given you up to a system in which you have NO choice in, you are then processed and indoctrinated with regulations, punishments and general drab including religion. Once you are” free ” from your mandatory educational responsibilities, you will then be worthy of either, fighting to defend your democracy or/and become an adult, this will imediately put you under statutes, now there are tons of organisations out there trying to inform people about facts and figures, pounds and pence etc…….Trying to break away from this autonomy and organised chaos is not easy at all. Can we just think, who on earth created the economic system that has become a burden and virtual slave nation for the most ordinary people. That to me sounds like a watered down version of ” national service “. I wish i had more time to study economics, but there is material out there which totally sla~gs to death this corporate usury…Most kids are becoming aware of just what this is all about and who is responsible for the behind the scenes string pulling, the driving force behind the hideous amounts of debt this country now is in….I dont even think i want to, it just stinks so bad…
” The trouble is, most of us either talk thru our ar~se, or to ourselves “

    Yossa ” gizza job ” Hughes :o

From the 1960s musical, Bye Bye Birdie:

    Kids!
I don’t know what’s wrong with these kids today!
    Kids!
Who can understand anything they say?
    Kids!
    They a disobedient, disrespectful oafs!
    Noisy, crazy, dirty, lazy, loafers!
    While we’re on the subject:
    Kids!
You can talk and talk till your face is blue!
    Kids!
But they still just do what they want to do!
Why can’t they be like we were,
    Perfect in every way?
What’s the matter with kids today?
    Kids!
I’ve tried to raise him the best I could
    Kids! Kids!
    Laughing, singing, dancing, grinning, morons!
And while we’re on the subject!
Kids! They are just impossible to control!
Kids! With their awful clothes and their rock an’ roll!
Why can’t they dance like we did
    What’s wrong with Sammy Caine?
What’s the matter with kids today!

See? Nothing changes much – one generation moans about the other, lol.
