At least over there “life” means “life”, not 12 years like it can do here- I think in the long term the right decision was made. You sound like a sensible American woman (i said that in my least patronising voice ok! )
Since Labour came to power, ‘life’ no longer means 15 years with 5 years off
for good behaviour.http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/berkshire/4953362.stm
There are now, many court cases where the sentence reflects the crime
I know this government is far from perfect, but let’s not forget the changes
for the good it has brought about. It wasn’t an attack on Labour Owen, I think we’ve got criminal justice wrong since the abolition of the death penalty and thats every government whose had a go since then at getting it right

A marvellous result, I reckon. To kill him would have provided him with the martyrdom he so badly wanted.
Don’t you think he has that notoriety anyway Pikey. No offence AW btw, this guy is now locked up for life. I have theeeeeeee most suspicious nature though and I do wonder whether he’s just been made what we’d call here a ‘patsy’. Therefore giving him and his cause the martydom the ultimately seek.
After all, don’t the ‘suicide’ bombers see it as becoming a martyr for their cause. :?:-s The whole point of martyrdom, at least in this instance, is the dying bit. I think that the Americans have sensibly deprived this man of his martyrdom.
If he was a ‘patsy’, surely killing him would have been the best option as, famously, dead men tell no tales.
And, yes. Religiously motivated suicide bombers do see themselves as becoming martyrs. That’s where the suicide bit comes in.
