Why is it that society finds fat people accetable? If a person in magazines or on TV is slim we moan about creating a bad image for young girls, but when fat people appear in public, we congratulate them and tell them how good the are, so we condone fatness, making young people think that being fat is right. Double standards again, no thin people more fat people thats the message we are sending. It is not ok to be overweight, it costs us money and people loose lives. Human rights seem to sway us into accepting fatness and never being negative about it. I think we SHOULD tax the fat!!

Tax the fat, we already do. That is why most food products containing alarming amounts of fat have increased in price over the years and will continue to do so. Why don’t we just tax everything because somebody else dosen’t agree with it. If somebody chooses to be fat that is their choice, if somebody chooses to be skinny that is also their choice. Or I suppose, you’d want to punish them also and have the government tax salads and fruit and health drinks. Everything costs the government/tax payer money these days, the answer or soloution cannot be found just by taxing something because it’s ‘unhealthy’ as this will not stop people eating it, alternatively awareness would be the way to go. In most cases, the government couldn’t care less about your health or the type of food you eat as they just want to make money off the products that are bought the most ie fatty foods, alcohol and cigarettes and that is why these products are highly taxed and it’s more than likely not because they are bad for your health.

People like eating junk because it tastes good, that’s all there is to it. And why shouldn’t they? Every pleasurable activity is detrimental to one’s health in the long run, if applied without moderation.

I can appreciate your general ‘concern’ Holistic but taxing the fat wont work. I believe in this case incentives to mantain a healthy lifestyle will work better.

If somebody chooses to be fat that is their choice

Well yes, I agree, up to a point …. they don’t pay double fare on public transport, yet they can take up more than one seat, to the discomfort of the person sitting next to them. But what do you call fat? I’m overweight but classed as average build! Some people are large framed yet underweight. People can be as fat or thin as they like, until it poses a problem for someone else.

Same goes for Vegetarians (invariably skinny and undernourished) …. I have friends who are vegetarian and I have no problem with that until it affects me. They chose that option … I didn’t. Go to their house for dinner …. it’s all vegetarian (no meat option offered for me) … they come to my house for dinner …. I have to put on a vegetarian option for them and they moan if I decide on meat for myself. Further, they will be picky (are the eggs free range? …. are the carrots organic?).
Went out for the day a few years ago with some vegetarian friends … we took a packed lunch … they forgot to pack one. Middle of nowhere, we started opening the lunch which was mainly chicken sandwiches …. we offered to share and they ate the chicken sandwiches without any quibble … if so fussy otherwise, why didn’t they take the chicken out of the sandwich?

You might as well tax the fat as they’re going to get crapped on by HMRC, just like the rest of us. At least it will give fatties a chance of blubbing that they have been yet again unfairly discriminated against.

    Letter from HMRC

    Dear Fat Bastard,

It has been brought to our attention (by members of the community in which you live) that you are a greedy fat pig and that you spend every waking hour snorting and snuffling through the dustbins in the hope of getting an extra mouthful of rubbish food.

This simply will not do !!! Incessantly scoffing double helpings of McDonald’s supersize ratburgers is not only damaging the environment, it’s also adding layers of blubber to your already ginormous pot belly and oil drum thighs (we won’t mention your hips and backside here to save you further embarassment)….. so we’re going to supersize your Income Tax bill.

Solely as a punishment, and because we are prejudiced against grossly fat bastards, we are imposing an additional “Fat Tax” on you, relative to your excessive size.

In your particular case this will amount to an additional 55% of your normal Tax bill for the year 2009/2010. We sincerely hope that this chokes you and thus assists you in losing weight.

    Yours etc.

    HMRC
