Some very good points raised here.
It would seem that there’s a very definte possibility of the Anglican Communion introducing some manner of gay marriage into their faith. I believe this is one of the reasons why some Church Of England ministers and members have converted to Catholicism in recent times, as they see no such change on Rome’s horizon. It’s a deeply sensitive and at times tragic subject.
18 June, 2012 at 10:00 pm #499156May I ask why my input on a different thread is being brought into this? This being a thread I havent contributed to, yet one (up till now) that I was enjoying reading. And in such a misinterpreted manner at that .. ranging from the accusatory to the condescending?
That thread finished in relatively good spirit did it not?
If there are still issues unresolved, I’m certainly unaware. And I was quite content to walk away agreeing to disagree. This is not a whinge, just an expression of exasperation. So, with all due respect, I’m asking that I be left out of this one.
As a favour.
I’d appreciate it.
Thanks.

18 June, 2012 at 9:54 am #499331I agree. See? I always knew the Reformation was bad news lol.
But seriously, it’s only in recent years that my own country has taken steps to modify or indeed eliminate the more stringent Catholic stipulations that have been present in its constitution. It is, and always has been a difficult relationship, and not without it’s fair share of tragedy and wasted opportunity historically.
Constitutional questions put to the Irish people in recent years have had more than their fair share of church v state dilemmas. Massive moral issues such as divorce and abortion have all had the referendum treatment. Personally, balancing fidelity to ones faith with ones civil duty and obligations as a citizen have been difficult at times. Not always in fairness, but enough to register deep reflection , soul searching and difficult decision making.
Words is perfectly right. In registering my approval for people to at the very least have the right to choose what I may personally have a problem with, I am in many ways asking others to grant me the same courtesy. This is the very essence of democracy. The Catholic Church on the other hand, is not a democracy. And if it maintains a stance of zero tolerance on what it perceives to be forms of a la carte Christianity then so be it. I’m afraid trust in the Holy Fathers judgement seems to apply here.
Balancing this or sometimes attempting compromise can be murder I tell you. As you can imagine, it’s not always a walk in the park.

Yep Jen, I don’t see why there should be any impediment to the legality of gay marriage under state law.
The church issue was raised in scept’s original post and Reigions right to object and I do agree with Mrs T, but unfortunately some established faiths do not have the best of records on “evolving”.
I’m certainly not saying I agree with such a stance, but if history has taught us anything, it’s that there has never been a rush to change fundamental views and principles , let alone one as seemingly radical as this.
The whole notion of progressive Religion is a deeply complex one I guess, as some would see Religion based on the very foundation of certain core absolutes.
A difficult one indeed.
In fairness, some institutions have taken steps with varying degrees of success.. Some of the Anglican communities for example.
