I have two middle names.
The first, Luke, was given to me at birth by my parents.. after Saint Luke
I took the second myself, in the early 1980s, as my Confirmation name.. Alexander.
I was erm.. busying myself with the Romantic poets of the early 19th Century and their grand scheme to Hellenise the world and what not, which in turn led me towards the gilded sandals of Alexander The Great
Talk about delusions of grandeur :?
Anyway, I believed at the time that the ironic smartarsedness inherent in applying this in a Catholic ritual, juxtaposing the Hellenic Alexander with the Christian heavyweight Luke would provide for a somewhat balanced life philosophy.

The perceived martyrdom of fallen leaders was always a source of increased activity for Irish Republican terrorists.. going all the way back to 1916.
Indeed, this new bogeyman may be just an extension of the last. We are being led to believe that the world of militant Islam has never been in such turmoil and flux, even by it’s on volatile standards.
There’s a huge amount of spin going on at the mo.. hard to pin down the truth of it all. Massively emotive imagery.. news feeds from Ground Zero, White House press official frenzy, reprisal fear etc .
All great fuel for patriotic fire.Pure fantasy.
The guy died a long time ago.It would seem this particular manifestation of the phantom bad guy image has run it’s course.

This nice little sideshow will give us a little break to sleep comfortable in our beds for a wee time.
Needless to say the triumphalist circus will roll on for a little, tempered with the inevitable calls for “Vigilance”.
Then we will be led once again (with very little persuasion) towards the new incarnation of global badness.. yeah, like some kinda diabolical Dr. Who regeneration.Uh huh.. get ready for a new allignment people!
Maybe China? (Just in time for it to surpass all as the leading economic power in the world? How very dare they!)
Maybe a return to our old baddie friends the Russians? (They aren’t too happy with NATO at the mo!)
Pakistan? (They aren’t too happy about the Mossad like operation performed on their soil. A nice nuclear power too! Oh yes! Delicious!)
Who knows? But there will be something or someone.. and soon.
