I recently submitted a petition to the UK governments e-petition site, proposing to ban car advertising. Below is a copy of the proposal, which I ask you to consider. if you agree please sign the petition. The URL has been added also at the foot of this page.

“We the undersigned petition the Prime Minister to Ban car
advertising that falsely uses images of health, nature,
    pleasure, sexual attraction

Tobacco companies used false advertising to promote cigarettes
until the 1980s, damaging the health of smokers and others,
    until it was banned.

Why should this be any different for car manufacturers?
Everyday we are ‘seduced’ by images of the car as an object of
desire, being at one with nature as a healthy ‘lifestyle’
option, when the reality is that cars are damaging the health
of us and our children through carbon emissions, destroying the
environment through global warming and creating an antisocial
nuisance by cluttering our streets with their ugliness,
creating noise, and menacing more socially conscious users of
    the UK’s roads.

If the reality of car usage on the streets was portrayed in
advertising in the same way it is now done with smoking, our
nation’s health would be better, our environment would be
better, and there would be less congestion.

I urge the government to restrict this kind of false
advertising and malpractice by car manufacturers”

Ok so its not very well written I know – I wrote it in a bit of a rush. However the sentiment is there – and what with all the car owners trying to stop the Govt from introducing new road taxing systems, i thought it was about time that others who disagree with the dominating forces of the car culture stood up to the car manufacturers….

Here’s the link…. and with thanks for your support.

Cars damage people through accidents. That is the big damage they do. Whether man-made CO2 emissions damage the environment is still open to question as the recent TV programme showed (to me at any rate).

The big environmental crisis facing us is not global warming, which is probably a natural phenomenon related to sunspot activity, but the drying up of the supplies of oil and gas to fuel our lifestyle.

However there is nothing wrong with car advertising except when it glorifies speed and recklessness. These motoring journos who glorify bad driving are the equivalent of Pete Doherty etc. glorifying illegal drugs!

If a government is serious about the environment, in particular the looming fuel gap they should forget road pricing and introduce fuel rationing!
