Was in a shop yesterday standing in the queue…..2 friends in front of me…moaning about the price or this and the price of that….one said she coudn’t even afford any luxuries in her shopping this week…..the other said she banned her partner from going to the pub this week for the same reason….money being super tight etc..
Their turn to be served…..each one bought a packet of fags….£15 ish each…..I mean….
Am I being a stuck up judgmental biatch or is my astonishment valid?
I don’t smoke….never have…never been a big drinker….last few years I have completely given up the drink…..does that make me think I am better than anyone else? No….I am just saying….I don’t give a shit about what anyone does with their own money….but if I was super skint…things like fags and booze woud be the first to go surely?

The problem with fags Kenters is nicotine is such a strong drug. You sleep all night and the 1st thing you do when you wake is light up. I gave up many moons ago but still see school kids on their way to school smoking. I thought the days of people smoking and the known effects of it would have made kids see not to. The thing is i have not had a fag for over 10 years now but know i could light up tomorrow no problem (but im strong and wont). I understand the older people still smoking as they wasnt anything proven about how bad it was to you but how can we still see kids on the way to school puffing away like look im cool as i smoke? End of rant
BTW pop in on the morning of the 24th or 25th this month and say hi to the few regs left? See you about 9am

cigarettes are well known drug. sister could never give them up despite financial issues. much as you outlined and a single mother to boot. wife managed eventually to break habit. though at time also bad way money wise ( second hand tyres -fitted myself etc) no pocket money for kids , cycle everywhere or walk. wife cut down to 1 per day! went in a local shop chatting to owner ,, he telling me about customer .. saying 3 kids. no enough benefit money to buy shoes kids needed etc..then after buying cheap foods .. bought both of whisky and pack of fags! owner was shocked .. shows people have different levels of ideas what is important. my own ideas were no cash for benefit.. credit card only.. so you ca buy food .clothes etc but NOT drink or fags with it. ( pigs flying)
Good point H….we don’t all think the same things are important ….however I will always struggle with adults buying fags and booze or essentials or treats for the kids…..
i was being judgemental….because heavy smokers and heavy drinkers never think they are compromising anything in their life because of their habit….of course they are…..all smokers do not have more disposable income than non smokers….

Somer…great points and I do get the addiction bit….but its difficult for non smokers to still fathom it all

In work every other weekend so only get to catch up with a few whos left now and again. The 24th would be my next weekend off.
Excellent subject kenters. Like you, never have and never will. Mum smoked like a chimney and it put me and all my siblings off from birth. I hardly drink either because I get my kicks from sporty things. I do worry when seeing young kids vaping. It seems to be the fashion but policing any ban would be impossible so its down to education to do the heavy lifting.
If I have to be judgemental then I can only imagine people smoke and/or drink and maybe do drugs because they can’t afford to do anything exciting to get a high in a natural way. When you have an addictive habit (mine is Tetris), it takes wild horses to drag you away. Well done to those who have kicked it.
