The former Archbishop of Canterbury has called for tighter controls on immigration when Gordon Brown becomes prime minister.

The Refugee Council said he was out of step with other religious groups and that controls were already strict.

Carey said: “At home, the issue of immigration will not go away and I hope that he will impose stricter controls on those entering the United Kingdom.”

He added: “I hope he will not forget the importance of Christian identity at the very heart of being a part of the United Kingdom.”

Tim Finch, of the Refugee Council, Carey would seem to be out of step with the Church of England and other Christian and faith groups which have been in the forefront of calls for more generosity to be shown to migrants and refugees.”

:D Christianity at the very heart of the UK? How many of the 60 million residents go to church, about 3 where i live.

I suppose Carey is more concerned that other religions are increasingly contributing to having a more equal religious population bablance. He cant warn about other religions rapid growth in this “christian country”, that might seem “racist”, so he attacks the immigration policy because the vast majority of them are non christians, and he knows the publics main political and social concern is immigration.

    Not very christian of him…
