Wow I have to say well done to the pilot and his team for his quick thinking, as things could have gone so much wrong.
I just hope they get the investigation done quick!
17 January, 2008 at 8:59 pm #304694Sounds like it could have been a lot worse.
17 January, 2008 at 11:04 pm #304695At 40,000 feet across the North Sea, I’d say it could have been worse
Lucky does not begin to describe it
17 January, 2008 at 11:06 pm #304696Ive not heard anymore other than there was no warning of the emergency landing, did something happen earlier then, before they got near the mainland?
17 January, 2008 at 11:24 pm #304697FRom what has been said so far, there was a total and complete power failure and the plane simply glided in from about 1 mile from the airport
I really meant a power failure at 40,000 feet and its a long way down
17 January, 2008 at 11:38 pm #304698I see. Yep. The pilot and crew should be applauded. 8)
18 January, 2008 at 6:39 am #304699Apparently …. the power failure affected both engines and occured as the plane was making its final approach towards Heathrow and was around a mile or two out.
It managed to squeeze itself over the perimeter fence and plopped down just short of the runway itself onto the rough grass and skidded to a halt …. stopping right on the edge of the tarmac bit.
The ”interesting” bit is that the southern runway approach takes the plane right over a heavily populated part of Feltham / Hounslow so if the pilot had NOT managed to trade off speed for height as he did – it would have crashed into this area and not only totalled the passengers and crew, but also would have made quite a mess of the local area – slightly to the detriment of the population.
18 January, 2008 at 6:16 pm #304700Have you ever been to Feltham / Hounslow, what a fecking dump. It needs flatting
18 January, 2008 at 6:24 pm #304701I couldn’t agree more. the houses are nasty and horrid and the people that live in them are all chavs. Dumping a few thousand tons of aeroplane on top of them would be doing them a favour.
Mind you, it would make a mess of the local traffic ….. so maybe it’s not such a good idea.
19 January, 2008 at 4:48 pm #304702I thought Hounslow was being targetted for wide spread urban renewal!
They missed.
