So there you have it Rob …. the consensus of opinion is that you need to format your C: Drive and do a ”clean” instal of your Operating System.

Just a thought that occurs to me. You say that ”Spyware Doctor” was apparently the cause of this issue. Is this the same ”Spyware Doctor” supplied by PC Tools??? – because I have had this installed for a couple of years now (currently version 4.0) and have run it without any problems of any sort at all.

All it does is to clean out ”cookies” and the like, that it regards as spyware or malware (i.e. those that track and report on your internet surfing habits etc etc). It has a library of spyware definitions that is kept updated daily – in the same way that an anti-vitrus utility does – against which it checks every time you do a scan.

It also has a number of useful filters that prevent your computer being infected with ”drive-by malware” for example.

As far as I am aware it does NOT amend, alter or delete any Registry values so I am a bit puzzled as to what exactly corrupted your Registry.

Apparently (the machine has now been collected) the Spyware Doctor on this machine was from a dubious source, so doubtful if it was the same as yours PB, thanks for pointing that out

Well I got a message on starting up my pc to tell me there was a free upgrade avaliable for spyware doctor, version 5. So I,ve upgraded all that, no problem. At least something works on it because IE7 is effing useless!! ffs, every single time I simply close a web page it always says, internet explorer has encounted a problem and needs to close etc. ffs, and it,s supposed to be an improvement!…grr.
Mind you, yesterday, I was in chat and spyware doctor came up and told me it had generated some report or other. Couldnt tell you what was on it to save my life, it was all written in fluent punjabi. Couple of times thats happened now. And I tell you something else that sometimes happens in chat(whilst I,m on my soapbox I might as well), for the life of me I,ll go to type, and no matter how much I try, it won,t type, then I,ll get a rush of text on the screen and away we go again. ffs. Why can,t these poxy machines just work??
(bet I get told to set fire to it and claim on the insurance)

Ive had a few of the same probs as you Bat ^^. Tonight I reset my internet options and that seems to have worked. I kept getting the rush of text that you mention, and all these error msgs:

“IEXPLORE.EXE APP ERROR bla bla bla lots of numbers and stuff memory could not be read”

After resetting it seems to be running okay. It does disable most add ons and a few other bits, but you can enable these one by one as you go along, not a bother atall.

Tools>internet options>advanced> go down and hit the reset button.

It comes up with a list of what you will lose, and what will be kept.
