Perhaps I should apply for a job as a queen’s chaplin and sue because I’m an atheist republican!

Bassingbourne55 replied to the topic English Jack to be outnumbered by Islamic Mohammed in the board Getting serious 17 years, 8 months ago
The figures are probably skewed by the fact that a much greater proportion of muslim boys are called Mohammed than non-muslims are called by any particular name, be it Jack or whatever.
All Sikhs, I believe, have the surname Singh, so if there were as many sikhs in UK as muslims, Singh would be one of the commonest surnames in UK.

Bassingbourne55 replied to the topic what a suprise ? in the board Getting serious 17 years, 8 months ago
The death penalty was abolished in this country even for the most horrific mass murders. So we can’t allow a section of the community even begin to believe that the death penalty is justified against teenage girls for defying the wishes of their parents.

Bassingbourne55 replied to the topic stay or go ? in the board Getting serious 17 years, 8 months ago
Cases like this should always be judged on the circumstances of the individual involved and its a pity that some people like to use someone else’s suffering purely as an excuse to come on a message board to say something nasty to provoke a reaction.

Theres 10 billion tones of coal in britain alone.
You can’t run cars, lorries, planes or modern trains on coal! OK, we could bring back dirty, inefficient steam locomotives and we could make gas from coal to fuel vehicles but it’s old, dirty technology. Coal is used in several of our largest power stations and will continue to be but, despite…[Read more]

I’ve never been to a Weatherspoon’s pub but next time I do I’ll go on my own and sit nursing a pineapple juice all evening.

Bassingbourne55 replied to the topic muslim fanatics slaughter bhutto in the board Getting serious 17 years, 9 months ago
This is very sad. Ms Bhutto will be seen as a martyr in the name of freedom. She was courageous – she knew the risks she was taking when she returned to Pakistan.
Today’s outrage, I feel, is going to have huge repercussions. I know we aren’t yet 100% certain it was Al-Qeada or similar who did it – it could have been a lone fanatic. But Bhutto…[Read more]

Bassingbourne55 replied to the topic Reasons why the queen should be removed in the board Getting serious 17 years, 9 months ago
I am a republican and support an orderly and seemly abolition of the monarchy. But for totally different reasons from those given by the original poster. I find it very difficult to agree with anything they say!

I think a lot more is made of these age-old conspiracy theories concerning freemasonry.
I’ve no time for the masons, the whole thing sounds rather ridiculous with its ceremonies and secrecy. But I believe most masons are in it for benign reasons. There might be a few corrupt police who are in the masons but they are also, presumably corrupt…[Read more] -
Bassingbourne55 replied to the topic Fortnightly bin collections a load of rubbish in the board Getting serious 17 years, 9 months ago
Despite the tone of my original post, I’ve always supported recycling. But the councils are trying to force the issue, under pressure from the government, on a population that is ill prepared for it. It’s like trying to encourage a more trusting society by banning locks on doors – it just won’t work unless everyone buys into the idea.

We decided to pay off our morgage 2 years ago as it was an endowment with a predicted shortfall. I worked out that cashing in the associated life insurance policy, although at a loss, made sense when taking into account all the mortgage interest payments and life insurance premiums we would save over the next few years.
But it’s not all good…[Read more]

Bassingbourne55 replied to the topic Nativity Plays in the board Getting serious 17 years, 9 months ago
I am an atheist and, while I don’t object strongly to nativity plays in schools, I’m quite happy to see them phased out. I believe children should be taught ABOUT religions rather than indoctrinated INTO them. The same goes for politics. Allowing the spread of hardline ‘ethical’ views of any kind, under the excuse of ‘tolerance’ is a dangerous…[Read more]

No, the teddy is clearly the guilty party here. It should be beheaded in front of the schoolchildren as a lesson to all other teddy bears that try to get above themselves.

Probably the main statistical result of this absurd teddy bear affair is that beforehand there were probably hardly any teddies named Mohammed but now I’d imagine a lot of teddies have been renamed Mohammed! I know of at least one such bear.
Since radical islamists are in the habit of punishing victims as well as perpetrators, I think perhaps…[Read more]

Lots of old-school lefties are eating their words as we come to realise that not all the immigrants who come here subscribe to the old ‘coffee-coloured melting pot’ and ‘rich tapestry of cultural diverstity’ theories and, just like ‘us’, not all of them are nice people!
