These kinds of things have always happened – it’s just that they happen more often now.
I agree there’s no single solution. Most children grow up wanting to be reasonably good, even if they want to kick against the system a bit sometimes. Then there are those who like to push the boundaries. Among them, most boys and probably all girls would be deterred by the possibility of harsh corporal punishment. That would leave a small minority of bad boys, the sort now labelled as ADHD, who would not be deterred by the thought of corporal punishment. I remember a boy at school who was always getting whacked and hit by teachers yet it made no difference to his behaviour.
Nature and nurture both play a part. I knew another guy who had a good job, a good education and came from a ‘good’ family and yet he still went out with the intention of getting drunk and picking a fight as entertainment.

3 April, 2009 at 9:36 am #394116Someone I know was a pilot in the RAF during the war and in his civilian business career he was a frequent flier as an airline passenger and travelled by plane like many of us hop on a bus.
But…… He never went in a helicopter and said he never would do so.

31 March, 2009 at 7:56 pm #394059April Fool’s or not, surely a gay person being randomly hugged could report the hugger for harrassment or assault.
I don’t know any gay people, but I might see if I can find some nice lesbians (fems, not butch, please) to hug!!!
17 March, 2009 at 11:19 pm #393627Their weekly shopping list doesn’t look much more than ours, there’s only 3 of us and none of us are overweight!
15 March, 2009 at 9:49 pm #393535Two people destroyed the coal industry in Britain – Margaret Thatcher and Arthur Scargill.
Remember, Scargill was arguably the second most powerful person in Britain at the time.Having said that, it would have probably declined to its present size without the involvement of either of them.
When the left adopted the green agenda there’s no way it could have carried on supporting the coal industry.
8 March, 2009 at 6:28 pm #393350We have an ‘involuntary’ pet ….. the neighbour’s bloody cat !!! It absolutely insists on using the back lawn as its personal toilet…. no matter what I say to it.
I’m going to borrow a dirty great big dog – with a bad attitude, a worse temper, and a big hunger (for cats).
That might keep the cats out but you’ll just end up with dog poo all over the lawn, which would be even worse!

5 March, 2009 at 4:08 pm #393337I know a story about a parrot that did something really terrible that caused a huge amount of damage to property but I’m not telling!!
With my cats, it’s the occasional cat-on-cat violence that gets me most – one of our cats is quite a bully when he feels like it.
