It’s just an absurd story. Canada is quite good at doing PC excess!

As an EU supporter I accept that the treaty in its current form should be shelved now. The EU should take a breather. But we should convert to the euro – I still think that. And EU flag should also be kept mainly because it’s a nice flag. OK, the Nazi or Soviet flags might have been visually OK, but they stood for something evil, the EU flag stands for something that’s essentially good but flawed.

It is a farce but if he’s so closely monitored and he doesn’t exactly look like the fast, nimble type, he probably won’t get vary far!

    the right to resign remains
i have just witnessed the farcical M6 fuel protest
thankfully i was going the other way.
Charge the next goverment with tackling fuel taxation
    not the motorist
and dont give me any sh’te about the greater good
how dare some rsehead whos only goal in life is to get to the next burger van
    hold anyone up

Like you say, Kevin, the right to resign remains – or in your case, the right to surrender your driving licence! When you’re tailgating other motorists who are ‘stupid’ enough to keep to 70 mph do you think how the fuel gets to your car, how the food gets to the shops?

I do accept that if the tanker drivers really get £45,000 a year they deserve no public sympathy over the strike.

Personally I only drive with zero alcohol or near zero alcohol. I don’t drink much anyway, just the odd small glass of lager, cider or wine. By ‘near zero’ I mean no more than residual trace like if I’d eaten a liqueur chocolate or had a small lager several hours previously.

I think we should have zero tolerance of dangerous driving. The penalties for someone caught driving dangerously, even when 100% sober and no accident has occurred, should be the same as if they’d been over the alcohol limit. A guy has just been caught in our town doing 60 in the 30 limit. He’s had his licence revoked for 2 months but after that he has to start again as a learner and re-take his driving test.

I used to be a lorry driver years ago. It’s a hard job with long hours. However tanker drivers are the elite among drivers and are better paid than most and get better conditons. Driving lorries can be enjoyable but it’s also very stressful.

Too often transport bosses see their drivers simply as an accessory needed in order to make their vehicles move. Most drivers get paid less than the amount of tax taken on the fuel used to run their vehicle. That HAS to be wrong.

Also, customers tend to always want things delivered yesterday while bosses want you to do a week’s work in a day but the driver is the fall guy. If he’s caught speeding or fiddling his tacho discs he can’t plead ‘but the boss told me’ or ‘the customer said if I don’t get there by 3 pm the place will be shut till tomorrow’!

I’m not saying this goes on in the fuel delivery sector – I imagine that’s very tightly controlled and monitored – but lower down the pecking order I reckon there’s still a lot of driver abuse.

I do mean Fujimori. I never said he was a nice man, though!

I just read a letter in ‘The Week’ magazine from a reader, pointing out that if Barak Obama had been standing for president in his country of origin, Kenya, the people would be talking about the possibility of Kenya having its first white president!

I don’t think we in Britain are 30-40 years away from being capable of electing a black prime minister. I think a black prime minister could be elected today if there was a suitable black contender. If we had an Obama or a Rice, they’d be in with a good chance.
But I never saw the likes of Diane Abbott or Paul Boeteng being prime minister material any more than Edwina Curry or Norman Lamont were!!! But Ian Duncan-Smith (remember him?) is a quarter Japanese.

This leads me off on a strange ethnicity related tangent. A few years ago Peru, of all places, had a Japanese prime minister! If Obama becomes president, what would be more remarkable than him being America’s first black president is that he’s actually African – I mean he, as an individual, came to USA from Africa.

assume the argument presupposes that if you’re black and american, you’ll vote obama? As opposed to saying, you’re American and who do you vote for.

No, of course not all African-Americans vote Democrat. Colin Powell was a Republican (and no doubt still is!). People speculated that he could become USA’s first black president only he decided not to run.

But a ‘cheated’ result would polarise public opinion, I’d imagine.

But to be honest, I think the whole ‘carbon footprint’ malarkey is a big fat con.

I tend to agree. The real crisis looming is fuel scarcity as fuel stars to run low. That is why human induced climate change, if it is happenning, will be halted. But I did vote tree hugger!

Not all 4×4’s are gas guzzlers compared to some conventional high performance or luxury cars, so it’s wrong to single them out. Also 4×4’s aren’t always what they seem – most Jaguar X-Types are 4×4.
