Religions should have to be licenced and all religious texts should carry a health warning saying: “some of the content of this book is probably untrue and could be harmful to those of weak mind”
I don’t know whether Salman Rushdie deserves a knighthood or not and, as a staunch republican, I would think twice about accepting an honour from the queen even if she gave me one.
Be that as it may, the knighthood is a sign that we in the west will never bow down to the tyranny of radical islam or any other totalitarian religions including the more malignant forms of Christianity that have poisoned our societies in the past.

I never found Bernard Manning’s jokes particularly funny but he was one of those people who was just funny to look at, which I guess was an advantage in the stand-up comedy world. Another such comedian was Les Dawson, whose jokes WERE very funny.
In an age where we are bombarded with nasty, foul-mouthed comedians who make sick jokes (e.g. Billy Connolly about Ken Bigley), I find it difficult to see what was particularly offensive about Bernard Manning. He was just a dinosaur
Every time I wonder if George Bush is bad I just need to think about the alternative – Osama Bin Laden, Al Zawahiri, Abu Hamza…….. Bush represents, to the west at least, the lesser of two evils.
But just because I’m a liberal, atheist, anti-monarchy, pro-EU leftie, don’t assume that people would have that much of an easier time they’s get from Smiley. I’d expel everyone and then only let back those that I thought came up to, or close to, my standards. I would rule my country by decree – I’d be a right little Nikolai Ceaucescu!!!!!!
I would set up the British Isles Federation, which would consist of the states of England, Scotland, Wales, Ulster and Eire. The British Isles form a natural territory for a single nation and that is why I think the Republic of Ireland should re-join with us. When the monarchy is gone (replaced by ME), the Church of England (founded by a serial killer) is disestablished, we’ve joined the Euro and Eire has ditched its ties with Rome, the people of the British Isles will be able to live together once again in one homeland under my benevolent rule!!!! LOL
Smiley would end up as the last person left in the country and then it would be easy for all of us exiled commies to put together a little militia with the help of the combined brainpower of a few chavs and make him sign an agreenment to abide by all EU regulations!!!
I agree, Waspish. We and other free countires, while promoting freedom, have allowed the establishment of outposts of a totalitarian islamic empire to occur here. It is a parallel with the 1970’s when the trade unions and universities were infiltrated by Marxists.

The root of the Palestinian issue is that there are 2 groups of people – Israelis who are mostly Jews and Palestinians who are mostly Muslims, who both lay claim to the same land but cannot live in peace together.
Hamas has brought islamic fundamentalism into the battle that was previously a territorial dispute with legitimate claims by both sides.
This inter-islamic violence, such as is also going on in Iraq between Sunni Al Qaeda and Shias backed by Iran (both these groups hate the west) is what I think could ultimately draw Iraq’s neighbours Iran and Saudi Arabia into conflict. This might buy some breathing space for the west but it would be terrible news for the millions of moderate people in Middle East imprisoned against their will by a totalitarian ‘faith’.
The mayor obviously understands this, as he is not a pro-sexual assault liberal (such as yourself).
