sceptical guy replied to the topic Why are female tennis players paid the same as male tennis players? in the forum The locker room 8 years, 11 months ago
I sometimes wonder whether to start a poll on who has the most inventive use of savage invective. There are a number who qualify, but the Norfolk Man comes pretty high.
I am sometimes forced against my will to laugh.
This is not a comment on any victim of this invective, merely a reluctant appreciation of the nasty imagery.

Forgive my ignorance, but what is the Duluth model, and how is it relevant to a thread on bullying??
Brnging in critical theory (whether Marxist of feminist) seems to muddy the waters.
This thread’s interest for me springs from whether people who are bullied are weak or not, and whther their parents are to blame.
All sorts of theories can be…[Read more]

Could you explain why some people are ‘weaker’ (more sensitive?) than others, and what the proper treatment would be?
Most, if not all, adolescents become very secretive and even hostile with regard to their parents at a certain point in their growth. It’s part of growing up, of becoming independent, and parents can easily miss tell-tale…[Read more]

Hey, mizzy….
did you ever hear that song about picking yourself up, dusting yourself down, and start all over again???
Now nothing’s impossible, I’ve found for when my chin is on the ground,
I pick myself up, dust myself off, and start all over again.
Don’t lose your confidence if you slip, be grateful for a pleasant trip,
And pick…[Read more] -

I wandered around when i was a boy with my eyes fixed to the pavement all the time, lost in a daydream.
So I often walked right into a lamp post.
I remember that my head felt quite sore afterwards.
Once I walked in front of a bus. I noticed the bus about an inch away from me and looked up to see the driver’s mortified face. He was too alarmed…[Read more]

Another great political song from pre-Hitler Germany.
Macheath – Hitler himself – Mackie Messer – Mack the Knife.
This guy is everywhere – some would see him appear on these threads occasionally, but they must be paranoid.
A poor widow wakes up raped, but who could it be? mackie, what was the price?
Seven kids burned alive in a jerry-built…[Read more]

One of the most moving political songs (the women singing French at the end would give Gomez Addams goose pimples).
Leonard Cohen’s The Partisan
with photographs of the French Resistance, some of them not nice. look at the faces carefully.
And, like, play it up LOUD.

Lotte Lenya, later the star of the James Bond movie From Russia With Love (she wears the shoes with knives attached to them), was a young prostitute picked up from the back streets of Weimar Berlin to star in the Threepenny Opera.
Here she plays Jenny Towler the barmaid who waits on the lecherous, drunken men while dreaming of a ship (almost…[Read more]

Of course, Linda.
If we were to live in a state of perpetual doubt, we wouldn’t be able to live properly.
We have to make provisional decisions, and often they’re wrong.
The important point is that they’re provisional. Otherwise we’d be intolerant bigots, like many of the brexiteers.
nobody likes you? I wouldn’t care if I were you. Go…[Read more]
