Oh jeeze, don’t get me started on this issue.
As the proud mother of a beautiful 16year old daughter, who has had anorexia (and been extremely ill with it) for the past 3 years i abhor the thought of ‘fat testing’ in schools.
Let children be children. Just because a child is ‘podgy’ or overweight at age 4, does not mean he/she will grow to be obese. Children’s shapes and sizes change as they grow. It’s all part of development.
But whatever you do, DO NOT instill weight issues into their heads at such an early age. Fat testing is doing exactly this. By all means educate them, (and their parents), sensibly on nutrition, but do not make it ‘personal’ by individual testing.
There is enough pressures on children to look right, dress right, have the latest gadgets, be the right size, have the right hair colour etc today, without having weight issues forced upon them at school.
I feel very strongly about this issue and find it very difficult to put into words just exactly how angry I am about the whole thing.
And yes Drivel, you’re right, it’s better to have an overweight child than an anorexic one.
