I think it’s the fact that it’s actually being made illegal to be married in the C of E or C of W that irks me…so if a Christian same sex couple do manage to find vicar who is sympathetic, he can’t marry them anyway.
It’s the Government trying to keep everyone happy but failing dismally – same sex couples won’t be 100% happy as there are still restrictions on where they can marry, the Church won’t be 100% happy as they don’t like the Government making rules on marriage which they seem to think is their sole domain and there are still place where same sex couples can get married when they’d rather they didn’t marry at all…oh it all makes me want to grrrrrrrrrrr!
Surely all the Government had to do was say yes we will allow same sex marriages, however we will give those licensed to conduct marriages the right to decide whether or not they will marry same sex couples; if they are not happy to conduct the wedding then they should direct the couple to someone who will. Just like doctors who are anti-abortion can refuse to refer a woman for abortion but will direct her to a doctor who will be sympathetic. It’s not exactly rocket science…is it?
