6 July, 2008 at 1:28 pm #165853I woke up to wall to wall people…. luckily I have 2 futons and my kid is away, so her room was free…anyway, we all had a brilliant time.
My head feels like a bucket though. I’ll join you in 2 hours after I’ve braved the vegetables that stroll round our local co-op.
6 July, 2008 at 1:14 pm #165848Did we all get polaxed last night? I have no booze left in the house now!!! Or food! And didn’t get to bed till after 4 ……had music up so loud am surprised we didn’t get the neighbours round with big sticks!
Was fun though :D
And I now have to stock up again, so I am going to be avoiding nasty hoodies in supermarket carparks again! My bruises have only just faded from last weekend too. Senseless it was…. but my fault for not leaping out of the way fast enough I guess. Was day dreaming.. that’ll teach me.
Word of the day….. courage.
6 July, 2008 at 12:55 pm #139710Nobody’s Hero
I think it’s time we talked this over
I think you’ve taken this too far
I never wanted to be different
Didn’t ask to be nobody’s star
Try and take control of it
Cause what you see is what you get
Try and take control of it
And not meYou say there’s talk of revolution – so what’s new?
You say there’s fighting in the air
You think that I’ve got the solutions
But do you really think that’s fair?
Try and take control of it
Cause what you see is what you get
Try and take control of it
And not me[Chorus:]
Don’t wanna be nobody’s hero
Don’t wanna be nobody’s star
Don’t wanna be nobody’s hero
Get up get out be what you areYou think it’s time you took me over
To do what you can’t do yourself
But don’t let heroes get your kicks for you
It’s up to you and no-one else
Try and take control of it
Cos what you see is what you get
Try and take control of it
And you’ll see[Chorus]
You think you’re nobody
And I get all the fun
But no-one is a nobody
Everyone is someone[Chorus]
Be what you are

5 July, 2008 at 2:55 pm #351263Across Latin America there were 36.4 homicides per 100,000 young people; Colombia topped the table with 84.4 killings per 100,000, followed by El Salvador and Brazil. Across Africa the average was 17.6 killings per 100,000 young people. In Russia it was 18 homicides per 100,000. In the USA the comparable figure was 11. And in Western Europe? France had just 0.6, Germany 0.8 and the UK only 0.9 killings for every 100,000 young people.
This is part of a report by the World Health Organisation in their report on Violence and Health, which puts things into perspective. The actual amount of youth deaths in the UK is tiny. Even with the trend recently reported, in comparison with the rest of the world, the amount of deaths is quite small and has not been increasing at an alarming rate, despite the impression given by the recent events.
The report suggests that although we should never bilittle the loss of life, the reality of the figures involved does not show an alarming trend, but more a slight rise. The report concludes:
There is no ‘epidemic’ of young people determined to stab each other. But there is an insecure society where many feel so cut off from one another that they can see the lowest rate of youth homicide in the world as the biggest danger facing Britain. That is a dagger pointing at the heart of our civilisation.
Is the media feeding paranoia? I feel it is, and this kind of panic mongering has been going on in America for decades, and is fuelled by ignorance.
