To delete an email without opening it, open your Inbox and click View in
the top menu bar, select Layout and a Window Layout Properties box will
open. Uncheck the box that says Show Preview Pane. Click Apply and
OK.
This will mean that only your Inbox list of messages will be displayed. To
view a message, just double-click it, and it will open in a new window.
To Delete a message, just highlight it, right-click and click Delete. It will
go to your Deleted Items Folder and can be restored from there if you
make a mistake.

Why would you choose this option? Especially when it’s convenient to
have emails open for you automatically? Well, with the increase in HTML
email, landing on an email that has images in the message will
immediately start to retrieve them from the internet (when you are
online). This can be quite irritating, especially as most of this type of mail
is SPAM anyway. Tagged image retrieval confirms your email address as
valid and targets you for more of the same. You can regain control of
your Inbox using this Tip.
