That’s not true. You skin is a very effective barrier to almost everything. If it were true wouldn’t needn’t inject medication like insulin into diabetics, we could seemly smear it onto them!

There’s an awful lot of cods wallop talked about carcinogens and chemicals in our environment. Strawberry jam could cause cancer if it were rubbed into ones retinae every day for six months but we don’t and eating it on scones (hmmmm…scones) is just fine. We have two organs that get rid of toxins: liver and kidneys and they’re very efficient at their job unless we bugger them up with alcohol! Also remember that we live with loads of chemical everyday from the perfumes we use to the cleaning products we use in our houses to the plastics all around us that leach thalates into our living spaces.

With the greatest of respect, jen_jen, whoever told you that putting things on your skin was causing you too lose the use of your legs was ill-informed to say the least. If you are experiencing muscle weakness then please see a medical practitioner as soon as possible as this is a very worrying symptom of several diseases.

A vaccine works by making you body recognise a threatening bacteria or virus. So a small amount of the dead nasty virus/bacteria is injected into you (dead so it can’t harm you) and your body ‘raises antibodies’ to the nasty bugs making it instantly recognisable to the body’s immune system in future. So if you should inadvertently become exposed to the living virus during your subsequent daily life, your body will recognise the virus and kill it off long before it can harm you.

Vaccines and indeed most medication undergoes a strict series of clinical trials that can take over 10 years to complete to make sure its safe for people. The exception to this are the seasonal flu vaccines and now the swine flu vaccine. These have to be made up quickly every year since the flu virus changes every year, so trials are pushed through more quickly. Swine flu trials have also be pushed through quickly to get them to people in time for flu season. If the vaccine wasn’t tested to complete safety, the worst that could probably happen is that you wouldn’t develop immunity and may catch swine flu or seasonal flu. Vaccines, just like your food, contain some preservatives-no big deal.
