I am NOT an expert gardener but Bambo is a brilliant plant that is easy to grow in a large or small area and depending on the type will grow happily in either a sunny spot or shaded. They add both a visual focal point and height for structure and will also live happily in large pots or containers if watered and fed correctly. Most sold in the UK are fully hardy and like most plants the best time to plant them is spring to give them time to establish before the colder months and with bamboo also so food reserves in the rhizome produce a good flush of fresh canes during the warmer months.

Be wary though that the invasive types require containment or they will spread rampantly. These really can be pests in the garden and a good quality root barrier is a must.

The clump forming fargesia do well in large pots or containers.

This link goes into it in more detail if anyone else is a novice gardener like me.
