    In most countries assisting another person to commit suicide is illegal, altho, in some places people that are terminally ill can get a “lethal prescription” from their doctor. On the whole it is a criminal act in the eyes of the law.

    If someone wants to die – and I am speaking about people with a serious, incurable illness – should they have the right to ask for help?

    I wonder how many people would choose to end their lives this way without the pressure that their loved ones may face criminal charges. Should it be a human right?

    yes i think it should be freedom of choice in such instances x

    Cas

    So do I =D> =D> =D>

    Yes it’d be open to abuse so it would have to be very carefully handled. But………people don’t allow animals to suffer do they, and if a person is proven to be in a sound mind when making this choice, so be it.

    I BELIEVE THAT EVERYONE OF US SHOULD HAVE THE RIGHT TO CHOOSE THE WAY WE WANT TO DIE……………

    AFTER WATCHING SOME PEOPLE CLOSE TO ME SUFFER WITH CHRONIC PAIN………..I BELIEVE THAT THEY SHOULD HAVE HAD THE RIGHT TO CHOOSE NOT TO SUFFER AND DIE WITH THE DIGNITY THEY DESERVED……….

    OBVIOUSLY LIKE EVERYTHING IN LIFE ………… WE WOULD HAVE TO MEET CERTAIN CRITERIA…………TO TRY AND ELIMINATE THE OPPORTUNITY FOR ABUSE THAT SOME PEOPLE WOULD ATTEMPT TO DO………..

    I sincerely thank you guys for your replys..it has been an issue that has touched me deeply these past few weeks…I have watched a friend go through such trauma re: the grief and legalities…I began to doubt her choice…thank you from the bottom of my heart.

    I don’t know if this will help but:

    Current law in the UK (The Suicide Act 1961) makes it a criminal offence to ‘aid, abet counsel or procure’ an act of suicide – but the person who actually commits or attempts to commit suicide is not themselves actually breaking the law. Before 1961, a failed suicide could and often did lead to a subsequent criminal prosecution.

    There is a new piece of legislation making its way through the parliamentary process called the Assisted Suicide Act – currently still a Bill.

    The outlines are:

    The Assisted Suicide Act

    < s.1(1) It shall not be an offence for a registered medical practitioner to assist in the death of a person if the following conditions are satisfied:

    (i) a person has made a request to die;

    (ii) in the opinion of a registered medical practitioner and a qualified legal practitioner, the person is competent to make such a request;

    (iii) in the opinion of two registered medical practitioners, one of whom has not been involved in the care of the person, that person is

    (a) terminally ill; or

    (b) in extreme physical or mental suffering.

    It goes on in similar vein but the upshot is that a person will be able to seek medical intervention to assist them to die (if that is their wish) without the assister being exposed to the possibility of criminal proceedings.

    Maybe this will shed a bit of light on the issue.

    = yes.

    If you let an animal suffer the way I have witnessed some people in their last hours of life the RSPCA would be round quicker than you can say Rolf Harris.

    So, yes. Definately.

    Tough decision to make but if poss then let the sufferer have the least pain ….

    If they can make a decision then it should be their choice, not the choice of someone who is looking to help their life along and not the sufferers!

    Yes, I agree and think it should be a personal choice; but certain things made me begin to doubt my own beliefs…I’m still thinking…again thank you to all that replied xxx

    tell them you love them then grab that pillow! if they panic then stop because that means they have changed their mind!!

    so i found out!!!

    its a long long long long thing this, lots of legalities if it ever became legal to assist someone!

    there would have to be witnesses! tonnes of paperwork! it would be more like an execution than assisting someone to be in a better place.

    and only for people who are terminally ill! and have a week to go! would have to be really on the last legs type of thing!

    none of these people who take anti depressants for no reason other than attention and an unfulfilling life who are on the brink of suicide all the time.

    a man lost his job in the city i live in recently and threw himself off a building! now it was a museum! tonnes of kids outside on school trips! that man had depression apparently, i dont care selfish git if you ask me! didnt deserve to live, but wanted that last bit of attention so chucked himself off infront of kids just to traumatise them for the rest of their lives, (im sure the sight of a man landing on the floor instantly dead isnt a good one for kids)

    assistance for death? maybe to be honest

    but theres more of an argument against it so i will go with the majority on this one
