We ordered an item of furniture from an internet furniture company called Furniture at Work. They have a swish site with all the usual shopping basket facilities, illustrations etc. Prices are marked as generously discounted. The furniture never arrived (over a month now despite numerous calls, always with the same excuse – ‘it’s down for delivery this week’).
I looked up this company on Google and one of the first entries was a product and service review site. Furniture at Work had appalling reviews – nearly all the 20 entries concerned non-delivery of items followed by refusal to refund. Of the few people who had received goods, they were either the wrong things, broken or both.
Payments are deducted as soon as you order the goods, which tend never to arrive. This is theft. We are intending to contact our local trading standards and those in Glasgow where Furniture at Work is based. Some customers have said they involved the police too, and we might do the same.
From another site we learned they have another trick up their sleeve for dealing with difficult customers. After people cancel their orders sometimes the furniture turns up and customers are billed the full, non-discounted price.
Use this company at your peril – you have been warned!

2 February, 2008 at 4:22 pm #308771No, there’s been no rows about it, we’re both just cross with the company (if it can be called that)! We’ve ordered lots of stuff over the net in the past and never had any real problems. The item was not all that expensive anyway.
But it’s worth looking at Furniture at Work’s website and then at a product review site to see the contrast between the promise and the reality – it’s actually entertaining!
2 February, 2008 at 4:26 pm #308772There are also a few “name and shame” websites out there BB,.. may be worth shopping them on those for what it is worth,
2 February, 2008 at 4:27 pm #308773I never buy fake furniture, I don’t like its style.
