OK I’m going to waffle on a bit now (nothing new there then!)
I once read an article about women who had mastectomies talking about how they felt about their scars, and most of them allowed their pictures to be shown. The one that sticks out in my mind was the 60-something who had had a double mastectomy in her 30s. Reconstruction wasn’t possible back then and the surgeons had not bothered to do a “nice” job on the scar, she said that their view was that she shouldn’t complain because she was lucky to be alive. Needless to say her confidence plummeted and she would never show her body to anyone – until she had a turning point and realised she was proud of her body and was proud of the story it told of courage and survival.
So when she hit 60 she found a sympathetic tattoo artist, had a stunning tattoo of a rope of ivy and roses winding across her scars, and took pride in going topless on holidays. It did help that she was a yoga instructor and had the body of a 30-year old as well though!
