    BNP wins seats in Barking

LONDON (Reuters) – The far-right British National Party (BNP), running on a hardline anti-immigration platform, won 11 seats from the Labour Party in the key east London seat of Barking and Dagenham in local elections on Friday.

The BNP targeted working-class areas with voters who are dissatisfied with the main political parties.

Opponents dismissed the party as a neo-fascist minority group peddling racism and preying on voters’ prejudices.

But Richard Barnbrook, a winning BNP candidate in the London suburb, denied being racist and said the party’s success at the polls was due to the Labour party’s failings on local issues.

“This race concern is nonsense, it doesn’t exist,” Barnbrook told Sky News television. “It’s law and order, education and proper housing.

Some Barking and Dagenham voters said they had turned to the BNP because mainstream parties had ignored their concerns over issues such as immigration and housing.

The BNP says its policies are not racist but are an attempt to return to “traditional British values”. Its manifesto pledges to “stop further attempts to enforce multi-culturalism on an increasingly sceptical and unwilling populace.

Pensions Minister Margaret Hodge, who represents Barking in parliament, said voters had reacted to rapid changes in the area, once a mainly white Labour stronghold which has become more mixed through immigration.

Statistics showed that ethnic minorities made up 14.8 percent of the suburb’s population in 2001, one of the lowest proportions in London but more than double the percentage 10 years earlier.

“We have to challenge the values of the neo-Nazi party — which is what the BNP is — and we have to listen very carefully to the concerns that my constituents are expressing,” Hodge told Sky News.

The BNP is the biggest far-right party in Britain but has no seats in parliament. The country’s first-past-the-post voting system makes it hard for fringe parties to win parliamentary seats.

BNP leader Nick Griffin, faces a re-trial on two race hate charges after an inconclusive trial in northern England in February.

The charges are that he used abusive or offensive words intended or likely to stir up racial hatred during a speech to supporters. He was cleared of two similar charges.

The BNP was fielding 356 candidates for the 4,360 council seats being contested in England.

Iv’e been watching events unfold since 3am this morning, sad, yea I know

Seems the only thing the politicians are capable of at the moment is blaming Margaret Hodge. ”If it wasn’t for her speech on 8 out of 10 people etc etc”. Shame they don’t put as much effort into their own shortcomings, then maybe the BNP wouldn’t have gained so many seats from them yesterday.

I said on another post, I had a lot to do yesterday and spent much of it driving to and fro where I had to be in the car, I passed an awful lot of polling stations where the only candidates canvassing were members of the BNP. Labour are this morning paying the price of their complancency. I don’t feel that this is a general vote of people in this area for the BNP, more a demand for action from our so called caring labour representatives.

It’s a wake up call for the main parties – which unfortunately now are all Conservative .
A lot of people are sick of having multi – everything rammed down their throats
First and foremost this is Great Britain – we have traditions which I feel most folks want to keep
The needs of the minorities shouldn’t overshadow the needs of the majorities

If the BNP dropped their “racist” attitudes – and targetted the criminal and illegal elements – not prejudicing by the colour of skin – then I’m sure they would win a lot more votes – and probably end up with a few MP’s in the House

Well now that the BNP bogeyman has arrived what can we expect.

All ferries from Dover will be booked for months ahead whilst they expel all immigrants?

Death squads will roam the streets randomly executing anybody they don’t like the look of?

Extermination camps to be set up in Barking High Street )just outside Tesco) to deal with anybody left over from the above actions?

Yup the future is finally today. watch this space…..

(Or is this simply yet another media scare?????)

You know thinking about it same here i have seen once a set of canvasers for Labour and all they did was stand talking not 1 leaflet have i had off them but i have had several BNP ones. If they wanted votes they should earn them also the BNP have gone around my street alot i think its possibly because like i put in another post not far from me is a block of immigrants who are under investigation every other day so they see this area as an easy target maybe.

There is here too Becky. There’s an area in Barking called ”Gascoine Estate”. Frankly I wouldn’t go near it in daylight hours, much less after dark. The entire place has been handed over to Kosovans/AlbaniansRussians etc etc etc., None of them pay a red cent in charges, it’s paid by housing benefit, and then of course theres there benefits as well. They sub-let these places room by room, council say that they can’t catch them! it’s boIIocks! iv’e never seen so many ad’s in shop windows advertising rooms to let, all at between £60 and £75 per week. It’s hardly rocket science is it for the council to catch them at it.

Iv’e nothing against immigration in general, if that is, they come here and get work and pay their way, but the vast majority of pple in the Barking area just don’t. The Kosovans/Albanians sit around in the cafe’s all day and no doubt discuss their earnings from their prostitution rackets. And that………………….at the end of the day……………is what really pisses me off!
