In anticipation of a volley of abuse I have put my tin hat on and have the car waiting but wonder whether anyone has a view on Bullfighting as cultural or indeed art?

Please do feel free to contact me. I have set up a Y ahoo group on the subject too.

I know this is emotive and I look forward to both the kicking I am going to get as well as the erudite, cultured and open minded friends I hope to make.

I have also posted this in the Art, Poetry, Music and film category where there is also a Poll on the subject.

I don’t know much on this subject (actually come to think of it I don’t know much on any subject  ).
Will comment when I’ve been brainwashed one way or another.

    Art????????

    I don’t think so.

It’s not even a fecking “fight!”

Pray do tell me how the horrendous torture, torment, pain and death of an animal purely for human entertainment can be considered art?

If I was to slaughter a human being in the same way a bull is slaughtered in a bull ring, people would call me sick in the head, mental, a sadist etc etc and lock me away for life as a danger to society.

I see no difference in applying these same terms to supporters of bull fighting.

I hope every matador, toredor the crowd and anybody else who indulges in this sickening and revolting spectale all die a very slow, and very painful death on par with the suffering the bulls suffer for they deserve nothing else.

I think it’s both cultural and art. Neither of which necessarily make it ok.

I think its cultural significance is obvious and needs little explanation. Those cheeky Spaniards love it. It strikes me as art because it allows for form and an expression of humanity within that form.

As I mentioned, none of this necessarily makes it acceptable. I, personally, wouldn’t particularly want to see it banned, though. It enriches a lot of people’s lives (whether we like it or not) and there are much more important things to worry about than the Josés teasing a few cattle.

I’m not sure where this idea comes from that it’s easy, either. I wouldn’t fancy fighting a steaming bull armed only with some kebab skewers.

initially i thought yeah its sick but after reading Pikeys reply he(?) makes a good point of it being a cultural thing in Spain.

for example: Amnesty International were asked why should males in Africa stop hitting and raping women. There reply was cause its wrong, to which the Africian men asked who does Amnesty think they are coming with Western views trying to stop something that they have been doing for years. Amnesty were stumped and could not reply.

NO i dont think hiting and raping is on, no matter where you grew up but until everyone agrees on whats right and whats not, each country will act on what they know.

So if we could change things for the better i’d leave the bull fighting alone until there was no more human voilence and rape, no hunger and everyone had a home.
