    Child Exploitation Online Protection Centre

After reading 2 very disturbing stories in the papers in as many days, I was wondering how this “panic button” actually worked.
I don’t use any social networking sites like Facebook, although I am aware of roughly how it works because my kids are always showing me stuff they put up or send or get sent etc.
If I am to think I know what it means, is it a link or somthing you could report directly to if you have concerns that someone is acting wierd or threatening you etc.
The thing that got me thinking was that as in the case of Chapman who killed Ashleigh Hall is that Ashliegh surely thought she was in no danger so what purpose and help would that “button” served her?
    RIP Ashleigh

I agree the idea is good but as you said unless you know someone is a threat its of no use at all !

Kenty here is a story in the Telegraph, (Yes PB the Telegraph!) about this very subject. Bebo, myspace and msn have this *panic button* but facebook won’t do it. The best option in my opinion is to shut down these social networking sites. They seem to be causing far more trouble than they are worth. Hence the reason why I have banned these sites on my pc.

Thanks Bat….that was one of the stories I ready myself too…..but my question was and still is that some people and not always youngsters will not think they are in any danger therefore how can they be helped? How can this “button” alert anything in their heads? We see little signs and messages on alot of internet sites telling us not to meet strangers etc, so that would be nothing new. If you tell a friend you are meeting someone for instance, you would obviously say somthing like if I don’t come back home or if I don’t ring you back in an hour…call the police! But you could have been raped in that hour or even murdered and chopped up within that hour. The only consolation there would be the killer or rapist would be caught quicker but the damage and loss would havve been done. Or even you could have forgotten to ring your mate because you were having so much fun because the person you met was fantastic and so much fun and they call the police when there was no need!
Seems to me there is no answer apart from using common sense. And if we all used common sense with meeting over the net seems to me no one would meet anyone.

I can’t see how any ‘panic buttons’ or anything else like it is going to help or prevent people being abused and and in the worst cases like Ashleigh, murdered. On one of the news sites this morning iv’e read that yet another 15 or 16 year old, has dissapeared with a man she’s chatted to on Facebook!!

On another news site, it claims that 87% of parents, don’t know what their 13 to 15 yr olds are accessing on their pc’s in their bedrooms, and that’s what needs to change!! All the panic buttons in the world aren’t going to make the slightest bit of difference!!

Apparently, if you press the “CEOP Button” onscreen, a big bloke dressed as Superman and with a blue flashing light on his head springs out of your monitor shouting “‘Ello ‘ello ‘ello …. wot’s goin’ on ‘ere then???”

Needless to say JustChat doesn’t have such a button because if we did, people would keep on pressing it and I’d get knackered springing out of all those monitors.

Anyway shouting “Hello hello hello …. what is going on here then???” doesn’t have quite the same ring to it.

It’s dangerous to meet people off the internet….it doesn’t matter which site you meet them on.

The safest course of action is to not go on the internet in the first place. Thats what I did. You won’t catch me turning my pc on at all these days.
