It’s time that this country became a Republic – there is no such thing as “Royalty.”

“Royalty” is man-made concept thought up by the ruling classes for the ruling classes in the ninth century as a means by which to “legitimately” oppress the ordinary citizen and concentrate wealth in the hands of a few. Hence, ordinary citizens became “subjects.”.

I am no one’s “Subject” and I want to live in a proper democracy. So it’s time to get rid of the House of Windsor who are an expensive and undemocratically elected waste of space and money, and turn this country into a true democracy.

Whilst we’re at it, the House of Lords which is nothing more than a home for the old and infirm, where they are ludicrously paid to attend, can be consigned to the dustbin of history as well.

“[Monarchy] is an institution that abdicated political responsibility long ago and which harms those who are caught up in it. It is bad for our democracy and bad for our pockets. The monarchy costs over 100 times as much as the Irish presidency, it is more than ten times more expensive than its German counterpart.

Yet this institution which spends so much of our money is exempt from Freedom of Information laws. It does not have to hand its accounts to the National Audit Office for proper scrutiny and it continually blurs the line between what is public and what is private property, allowing the Windsor’s to shift costs onto the taxpayer while retaining tight control over access and accountability.”

So as far as I am concerned, when Lizzie dies, the “Monarchy” should die with her.

The monarchy is not expensive, it is paid for by the Crown Estate aka the civil list, this agreement was made hundreds of years ago, going back to norman times, which gave the monarchy an annual payment. The crown estates profits are way beyond the payments given to the monarchy and any other profits are given to the treasury for the benefit of all tax payers, so in effect the monarchy subsidize the tax payer.
Besides that the monarchy spend alot of time as ambassadors for our country, also the queen pays taxes as do the rest of us.
As for being man made, it was man made hundreds of years ago, as was clothing, electricity, computers, internet, that doesn’t mean there is no such thing as them, they exist, i don’t think anyone is under the illusion adam and eve or if you like the dinosaurs developed royalty,.
On top of all that the royal family and everything about them from their castles to their homes, bring in massive amounts of tourism to this country and all that goes with that.
I think we should retain our monarchy and treat those that work within it with far more decency and respect than we do.
As for being a “subject” whether we are a republic, and therefor a number, or a subject will make no difference what so ever, there will still be classes and differences between the presidents and his or her people, its how it works, there are leaders and there are followers, if everyone wanted to do their own thing the world would be chaos. We have to belong to something.. alternatively we could live in the wilderness with no one other than mother nature to dictate what we do and when, but even then as humans we are still dictated to.. or ..another alternative.. if you don’t like the monarchy move to a republican country, problem solved.

There is no such thing as a “proper democracy” or a “true democracy”. It is a man-made concept thought up by the non-ruling classes, given lip service by the ruling classes to give the non-ruling classes the illusion that they have an equal say.

You can replace one man-made concept with another, you can call yourself a citizen rather than a subject (which is pretty meaningless in this day and age anyway) but you will still have a hierarchy and concentrated wealth no matter which model you adopt. It is the nature of the human beast and the inate desire to conform within a pack-like structure.

Bliddy ‘ell – never thought I would say I agree with Poli and not back Panda up!

However, good to see ya girlie :D (even tho I like the monarchy! – quite proud of them if I am honest, but, I am not a hardened Royalist as such, but I like what they do for charities too).

I ain’t anyone’s ‘subject’ btw either! If I am, they gotta cross the channel to get me (Tinks, I hope, would fire at them!) – and at present, as you know, I’m stranded on an iceberg with Cosy, and I am definitely NOT his subject!!

    very well-said, Jen.

The debate on monarchy strikes me as an irrelevance. The Royals are not what once they was. It’s almost entirely a ceremonial institution. In the past 30 years, the main common sense I’ve heard from leaders has come from the Queen. She can’t do much more than say things, as she has no actual power.

The fact is that panda, like so many others, is engaging in sham raddicalism – an attack on the monarchy is the same as an attack on Godz..it’s pretty irrelevant to the problems facing ordinary people.

Education and health cuts, housing, jobs..these are the problems which are facing us.

If the Eurozone collapses, the UK economy could be flattened in the turmoil, and having a monarchy or a republic is going to be a non-issue.

These attacks belong to the age of Tom Paine and the French Revolution – an 18th century radicalism bizzarely taking place in the 21st century, full of rhetoric and meaning…nothing.
