What was your favourite Blyton book as a kid?
I loved The Island of Adventure. Every kid’s dream to find and explore secret tunnels to keep them occupied during the summer hols. :P

I read that they took out the reference to the coloured man in The Island of Adventure.
I can understand that because to call black ppl coloured is rather un PC these days but they didn’t replace it with black. Strange.

As for changing older books to make them politically correct, I disagree with this. Books are a reflection of the time in which they were written, using the language of the time. If you rewrote Shakespeare or Dickens to remove the references to Jews there would be uproar, they were commentators of their time through their writing. So it should be with all books.
9 July, 2012 at 9:54 am #501922I agree, however, Shakespeare and Dickens are not on my bookshelf – too much at school! Not into Mills’n’Boon, but love P.D. James – whoedunnits in an oldie worldie way, but very present! I have a friend who knows her – says she sits in cafes and watches peoples, and that is how she gets her characters! Her books are brill.
