On my travels over the years I’ve meet a lot of people and some are still good friends.

One asked me for a favour, he wants a narrow boat.  And I’m thinking….oh the silly sods been watching watching too much youtube and don’t know what a pain in the azz they are.

My advice was to take a holiday on one first.

He didn’t want one for the UK……..he wants one for Florida, USA.

After months of looking on line he’s found the one he wanted and got a  boat survey.  Its cost him just over £110,000.

And then the boat had to be weighted and export paper worked completed. The freight cost to America for a 30 ton narrow boat is around £50,000.  When I rang him and told him…throught  he’d cancel the whole thing….but nope.

And he’s got the import tax to pay yet.

The boat was prep wrapped up in tarpaulins, loaded onto a container ship this week.  Its now on its way to America.  It should be there by end of January.

I did tell him more than once this was the dumbest thing he’s ever done……and he asked me how much I’d spend on my corsair sailing boat.

Its odd to think that a narrow boat which was cruising the Grand Union cannel  only a few weeks ago will be floating thru the Florida everglades soon.

When I think about it now it does kind of make sense. The water depth in the everglades is about the same as UK cannels.  Its still water too.  One of the few good things about narrow boats is there designed to handle weeds. They fit in well with Americans off grid living  and being an individual trend.

But I still think he’s spent too long on lockdown smoking pot and watching youtube  :bye:

You know little about middle aged men. Our wife’s and kids have left much like your looks.  Without paying out for leaches, its play time  ;-)

Why is he asking a multi millionaire plumber advice on Narrowboats? If he is going to spend that much money on one surely he would ask an expert?

Doa…if you want to brag….just do it…we know

Normally he’d just fly in and handle this himself but its not possible with current events.

I didn’t chose the boat or handle the sale and the “expert” was a boat surveyor. He asked my advice and then send me around the boats with while face timing.    Its what friends do.

My role in this was arranging transport and export.  I have access to a haulage company who regularly move equipment for me and they did it as a favour.  My own crane drivers took control of loading/unloading and staff at the office did the paper work.

Its not “brag” just another funny thing that could only happened during a pandemic. I still think he’s mad for doing it  :bye:
