    MI5?

    MI5 is a national organisation.

    MI6 is international.

    why would MI5 have anything to do with Iraq?

    I think you’ll find that it was the SIS (MI6 if you prefer) that was involved in the infamous WMD intelligence fiasco…. the 45 minute claim and all that stuff.

    MI5 deals with internal security within the UK and had no part to play in the provision of so-called evidence on the WMD matter.

    Well it was your comment that it was ”the same MI5 that gave us WMD’s” etc that made me respond.

    In fact MI5’s general level of intelligence information is quite good – not flawless it’s true – but on the whole pretty sound.

    The SIS (MI6) on the other hand is still smarting from the WMD issue.

    So if MI5 openly tell us that they are currently investigating a large number of terrorist plots, my instinct is that they should be believed and allowed to carry on protecting us as best they are able.

    Just to correct you all, MI5 deals with any threat to national security so they do work overseas at times to deal with foreign-based threats.
