OK I’m confused here…I didn’t see the Newsnight programme but as I understand it they didn’t actually name Lord McAlpine, they simply said a senior Tory figure…so why do they have to pay him compensation? Am I missing something? :?

Wasn’t Lord McA’s name exposed by Philip ( I am the best presenter on tele ) Scholfield on This Morning? Which I didn’t watch either ?

You could see the list. They had to blur it after the original.

Lord McA was widely tweeted as the culprit behind the Wrexham child abuse scandal – George Monbiot, the Guardian man, was one of several ‘reputable’ characters tweeting away merrily – so when Newsnight said a prominent Tory politican was involved it was immediately assumed to be Lord McA – nobody else was being accused. Apparently, McA’s lawyers are actively pursuing the tweeters now, and are going all-out for ITV. They accepted ‘only’ £185,000 from BBC because they accepted the fact that the BBC wasn’t actually paying a penny – we mugs are paying, through the licence fee.

Really shoddy journalism. And so stupid, choosing a rich Tory like Lord McA and then some dope like Schofield crudely pushing a list of visible names into Cameron’s hand in an attempt at shock horror gimmickry.

How the Jim’ll Fix-It scandal has mushroomed!

This country could get like France in the early 30’s, when vicious scandal-sheets like Gringoire and Je Suis Partout were creating an atmosphere of suspicion that the country was in the grip of a Jewish pedophile-criminal ring.

    No you’re not missing anything.

It’s the new digital age. Evidently we all have to be more careful.

The BBC did a piece about “a senior Tory”, then a couple of people said that the BBC had done a piece about Lord McAlpine. On their own none of these statements was libellous. It was held however, in this day and age with social networking, to be reckless at the very least.

Then other people predictably tweeted that he was (according to their incorrect information) indeed a culprit. That’s why he’s going after hundreds of people.

I should just make it clear that I understand that the BBC made several mistakes in investigating Lord McAlpine and the claims were therefore false. I aint having anyone sue me!

Send three and fourpence, we’re going to a dance.

    Internet whispers.

Anyone could get the wrong (or right) end of the stick.

    Whose next?
