Not so much technical as such, but just wondering if anyone out there has an Amazon Kindle or tried one out?

After our recent holiday and me carting 5 books with me to last a week (which they just about did!) my other half is threatening to buy me one of these for my birthday. It would certainly save a few rainforests, be lighter to carry, and save me having to get yet another bookcase but I just wondered whether they are all they’re cracked up to be or whether it’s just another gadget that will be consigned to the same cupboard as the sandwich maker, the juicer, the ice cream maker and all those other devices that someone thought was a good idea at the time!

i would suggest you buy an ipad, got one myself very recently
and can download all my books from amazon on to it,
some books are free, others may cost around £3 upwards.

its the best thing i have bought in a long time, i take it everywhere with me
i bought the ipad with wifi not with 3G, i only wanted it for books etc and a few other
things. although, its a bit pricey, but i would still reccomend it. :-)

I find that popping down to my local library is even more effective.

They have a great visual display system (bookshelves) where you can browse books by category ‘at a glance’. You don’t have to browse books individually to select a title that interests you.

Browsing is in full colour AND in 3D

You can manually select books and add them to your ‘cart’.

Best of all when you get to the ‘checkout’ it’s FREE. Yup you pay nothing at all.

    Beats an iPad any day.

OMG!!! That view was soo last century.

Look – I followed the selection procedure described above and took 12 library books with me in the suitcase on my summer holiday. What can be so difficult with that.

No mess – no fuss – no bother – and best of all …… NO COST !!!

    he’s old bless him

why would you want to put 12 library books in your case
(adding to the weight) then have to carry the one your reading with you everywhere you went,
i hope you have already read war and peace that book must weigh at least 2kgs

stick to the ipad hun its slim, neat, and just slips comfortably into your handbag
no need for silly looking bookmarks or dog eared pages, as it remembers the last page and paragraph for you, clever little toy it is, and it doesnt have that old library book smell (yuch) no licked fingers flicking the pages esp when the person who has read it before you might have been picking their nose ( or other things) ewwwwww!
libraries are so out dated now.
