Superb choices Cath !
From the classic Long Shot and Bob + Marcia, the very soulful Barry Biggs to the always reliable Ethiopians above, loved it all. Have you noticed how new Marley numbers seem to crop up all the time ? The guy wrote hundreds, and hundreds more that evaporated into the Kingston evenings….
Sounds like Nice Time

Boris GardnerYa know this mullarky is as old as time really. And reggae is a true mouthpiece for ‘World Music’. So many influences have congregated on the island over the centuries……
Now take the mazurka for example, or the polka’ or quadrille. These are just 3 of many popular dances that were invented in European ballrooms in the 18th and 19th centuries. In Jamaica the slaves were trained to play musical instruments like fifes and fiddles. Obviously so that they could provide the entertainment, but in this way the European diatonic scale of 8-notes was also absorbed. Then they could make their own commentary on the ruling classes, especially by inverting the quadrille. This music, utilised with the far more complex rhythms retained from Africa, is what I’m talking about.
I’ll shut up now
