6 September, 2011 at 11:29 am #477393while Freddie Mercury was a very talented man and his death was a tragedy and a loss to music, nevertheless Queen was a band, not just Freddie Mercury.
6 September, 2011 at 1:07 pm #477394I don’t think anyone suggested otherwise Eve. However, he was such a larger than life character that his death was always going to have a big impact on the band, not just in terms of singing and performing ability but also in terms of personality and stage presence.
A band is the sum of its parts, cogs turning together to ensure the smooth working of the machine, but take out the central cog and the machine stops working. Sometimes the central cog can be replaced with an almost identical one; sometimes it’s irreplaceable.
