It’s reported in today’s Daily Record that a paramedic, attending the scene where a teenager had been stabbed in the neck and later died, was ordered not to treat the boy but instead stay in the car and wait for back up.
Why? Because she was on her own at the scene of a violent incident and could have been sacked if she had went against regulations. The whole point of them is in the name, but this shows that in certain situations they’re no use to anyone. I can’t imagine what it must have been like for her to sit yards away from him being unable to do anything, nor can I imagine what the family must be going through.
sign of the times im afraid John..it could have been staged and half a dozen neds round the corner,ready to grab the drugs that they carry.
Possibly, but the moment that it became clear that it wasn’t staged is the moment the rule book should be thrown out the window.
A sad reflection of how times are really changing.
It is a very sad society we live in- every weekend ambulance staff are assaulted and abused mainly through either drink related or mental health related issues
Number one priority in ALL 999 calls is staff safety first then patient safety- it is drummed in during training- it is particularly difficult for rapid response drivers cos they havent got any backup but their own safety comes first
Its the world we live in and until we (ie all of us) stand up and say enough….its the way its going to be

The fact is that if the paramedic had left the safety of their car, they may have been able to save a life. That is what they are trained to do.
It is however a sad indictment of our society that we are having this discussion at all.
my brother in law is a fast response paremedic. he as never yet thought about sitting in his car while someone lay injured. its not what he was trained for.
Is he usually with another person pats? I wonder if they normally work in pairs, and on this occasion the paramedic was alone, and therefore it would have been against regulations to have left the car. But if that is the case, the rules are an ass!
