I hate rip offs , especially when all`s your looking for is just some advice , It all started…….
Last week I was having problems with IE I was so sick of pop ups it was untrue , I have the google toolbar with the pop up blocker on but it just does`nt seem to stop bloody poker dot com & dating sites popping up every other page , so I thought sod it & downloaded that firefox It was great , no pop ups it was ultra quick again just as though it had come out of its box again , Fantastic , only problem was my messenger cos when I clicked on for my emails it opened a IE ( Internet Explorerer ) window which then started conflicting with the firefox & I was back to having problems again .
I decided To remove firefox & try another route so now I have as my optional web brouser set as SeaMonkey its been great no problems with pop ups , Its fast , I can go to bookmarks where it says Imported IE favorites including my emails which is great I hardly use IE anymore .
After this I was reading through Tech Talk here on the boards where some one had posted a link to a Express Defrag which I downloaded & set to run every sunday at 2 pm which it does , I was so happy my puter was running as new again , Later on that day when internet boredom had set in & I was going out I Clicked Start , Turn Off Computer , the box appeared in the centre of screen & I clicked switch off & then left the room , 5 hrs later when I came bk I was suprised to see it still switched on so I did the same again , It flickered but nothing else . so I had to switch off by holding the Tower on/off button in for the 6 seconds.
Now as panic set in & had asked a lot of people why its doing this but to no avail , Apart from the odd person saying it sounds like a virus nothing help full was mentioned.
So I defraged , I ran the Crap Cleaner , I did virus checks & nothing was detected Ive even started useing my windows defender too lol .Now I live in a very small village where there are a bout Half a dozen shops , Two Pubs & everyone knows each other & the guy in then computer shop grew up with me so I went in for a chat about the problems im having & for some friendly advice , after explaining all of above I asked if he had any Ideas , his answer was simple .
” Bring it in ” at a cost of £60-00 & an additional £20-00 per day .
How many people in my position would accept this & pay out silly money thinking something serious was wrong with it , Not me , I`ll tell you , Last night I was at war with my computer & was losing missarably , but as I entered the wee small hours I remembered when I was downloading stuff with Limewire & had finished I did as normal I knocked it off by clicking the red box with the X in it as usual , I notice in the system tray bottom right the limewire icon was still there so i right clicked it & then left clicked Exit where as a box appeared stateing Limewire was now shutting down Hmm , I thought & did as above with the Express Defrag Icon . After this I went through the normal procedure of shutting down & low & behold it worked .
My point is your better off playing around yourself rather than panic & take it to the computer shop where they can use thier descretion & rip you off. If I`d had taken it in , They could have switched it on & known what the problem was in seconds & fixed it , then phoned me & say its more complicted than they had anticipated , kept it in the shop & charged me what they wanted.
I myself do not know much about computers & Im sure there are plenty of others the same , but im learning alot just by messing around & if anyone is having similar problems Please Rather than taking to the shop where you may be Ripped off , Post on here in tech Talk or even PM me ……. The Shop Is The Last Resort ……..
28 January, 2007 at 11:41 am #258094i took mine to a lad at work ages ago when it f00ked up
He sorted in the dina hour lol
I messed with me huubys old lap top that was broke and after a while i got it going
Had a bit of help of people in the room and on here
Its cheaper to go and buy a new 1 now days than to get some body from a shop to mend it
