I suppose there were bound to be situations like this when all the countries were given back their independence when the USSR was dissolved. I don’t know much about this at all, except what other people have already said, about Ossietia being parcelled out to Georgia etc.
I guess it is like the Basque movement in Spain, or the Kurds.

11 August, 2008 at 9:51 pm #360915I seem to remember a state some while back which was suppressing one section of its community in an area called Kosovo- the West didnt like it and felt the need to step in with bombs etc.
That state was Serbia, of which Russia is an historical as well as recent ally- as Georgia was suppressing ethnic Russians in South Ossetia- what is the difference?
In fact. ultimately we effected regime change in Serbia through our military actions in Kosovo and changed to a regime which was much more friendly to the West- if Russia did the same in Georgia and maniupluated a new regime which was Kremlin friendly..is that really any different than our actions in Kosvo?
12 August, 2008 at 11:48 pm #360916I’m afraid I’m on Russia’s side here.
Georgie invaded South Ossetia and started systematically ethnically cleaning it. The Georgians have committed genocide, shooting on sight anyone with a Russian passport.
The Russians in retaliation have sent a large force to save the South Ossetians, and are bombing the borders of Georgia to halt and delay any further attacks from the evil Georgians.
Nice work, comrades.
