When i was a teen…i was very heavily influenced by the film and series …Fame…sort of set my whole identity for years to come. What influenced me the most was not the dance side but the incoming changes between synth and classical traditions. There will always be a conflict between new and traditional ways of doing things and Fame for me brought it out….You have the older more traditional classical composer and teacher who has  some amusing run ins with his confident yet perhaps arrogant pupil. The pupil says to the teacher…..hey , i don’t need an orchestra….i’ve got a synth, i don’t need an orchestra as  i can do it all by myself. The Teacher looks at him and says….’son,…..that isn’t music……… that’s masturbation.’

No need for a fight if traditional and modern methods of making music work together. That’s the point of the whole exercise.

Feel free to tell me what any of you think.

    Synth v Piano?

Well in my opinion, there is no competition. Piano wins hands down. But then again I am a Jazz and acoustic purist so I’m bound to say this.

Of course, it all boils down to the musicians, composer and music genre concerned and involved. Needless to say a piano works better with a piano concerto recital, or a jazz quartet, whereas a synth works better in a synth pop, or electronic outfit.

Perhaps have a look at the career of the legendary Herbie Hancock, unquestionably one of the best pianists / syntheticists alive today, who has made great use of both throughout his lengthy and illustrious career.

Yes, I’d definitely take a Steinway Grand, or Baby Grand, over a Moog Synth anyday

I like both, prefer piano but both have their values.
