Probably be The Shaw-shank Redemption lol so what’s your second most inspiring movie you’ve seen and why do you find it so inspiring? For me it has to be Life is beautiful- a brilliant film in which a father helps his son to get through his time in a Nazi concentration camp by pretending he’s playing a game.

I saw it at the gate cinema in Notting Hill when it was first shown on British cinema (it had been banned in the USSR for being too difficult).
It was the first film I saw without a formal story – the mix of poetry, art, hitoruical documentary, symbolism was truly mind-blowing.
The western, Heaven’s Gate, has to be the second. Michael Cimino of the Deer Hunter directed, Kris Kristofferson and Isabelle Huppert starred
Heaven’s Gate had all the things which should have made it a success – full frontal nudity, rape, brutal violence, pitched battles – and was so expensive to make that it broke the famous United Artists, driving it out of business. Nobody went to see it. When they did people walked out. They didn’t know why they didn’t like it, but they didn’t.
I thought it was great!! I wasn’t alone.
It is now becoming recognised as a lost classic, after being shown in its full version (3.5 hours, cut from 5 hours), being shown to great praise at the New York Film Festival a couple of years ago.

Schindler’s List – (Liam Nelson.) Oscar Schindler goes to Germany to gain personal wealth in war time by using both Nazi/Jews. In the end saves 1000 Jews and no money to his name.
Saving Private Ryan- (Tom Hanks…) 4 sons in one family go off to war. 3 killed, and the military wants the final son to be saved and removed, to get back home. Small team sent out to find in war time, travel/search and rescue, some journey..
Have not seen Life is Beautiful, Tarkovsky’s Mirror, Heavens Gate Western, but will look into them for a rainy day. Ebay best place to buy.
