We all know that turn out will be low for the local elections this week; most people will not bovver with them, but here something to think about.
A few years ago the nice people in the government decided that there was too few people on the electoral rolls.
So the decided that anyone who was on any kind of benefit or paid local taxies would be place on the electoral rolls automatically and be able to vote.
They also set up local teams of officials to make sure that all the “voters” where all British citizens and any who were not, would removed from the list.
Now this is where it gets complicated.
First if you’re from any one of EU countries, you can vote in a European elections for the European parliament, therefore on the electoral rolls, but not in the local elections or UK parliament ones.
But councils only have one electoral roll and all polling cards are now updated, printed and sent out by computer.
So it’s no surprise that anyone can now vote in the elections regardless of were they are from or their statues in the UK has long has they paid there local taxies or get some form of government benefits.
After all you don’t need to be a UK citizens to pay council tax or get family credit.
So just how many people do you think have polling cards when they shouldn’t?
No one cares about this issue, the returning officers are more than happy to let it continue.
After all it’s not like you have to show a passport or an ID card when you vote, and there are a lot of people with lots of funny names here now who are all British citizens.
Then again there are a few who don’t have a UK passport or citizenship who do have polling cards.
Most local councillors would argue that anyone living in a community’s should have the right to vote on local issues regardless.
So where does it leave us?
Local elections voter areas are much smaller than the parliament ones and in some parts of the UK city catchments areas are made up of mostly EU immigrants or asylum seekers.
Next time your local council closes something down like a school or rest home then still finds the money for a nonsense project like “town twining with Biaystok” you can understand why.
