Has anyone managed to read the Lord of The Rings triology? I find it really hard going. gonna keep plugging on though…

Yes Jane…read the trilogy in my teens and a few times after in my twenties….the films that were made with Peter Jackson as Director are pretty close to the original….

In my opinion…Lord of the Rings is a real epic in the sense that one gets absorbed right from the start and the story just sucks one in….

There are many sub plots but the general theme is to do with the fight for good over evil, friendship and loyalty and honor…and the fight over one’s self being corrupted by powers of darkness…..

The main message is that light will win over darkness…..

It’s a man dominated story so  a lot have accused the books of being of a male way of thinking.

Like most great books…..one will read it time and time again to under stand and grasp properly the amazing relationship that exists between every character ….

Of course, Gollom first appeared in The Hobbit when Bilbo found the ring…….the hobbit was a very short book but it did what was necessary……introduce the reader to Gollom and the significance of the ring which came later in the Lord of the Rings trilogy…and of course, the relationship of Bilbo Baggins and later Frodo ( Bilbo’s nephew i think)who’s mission was to destroy the ring….

Tolkien didn’t just write a book….he created a world…he even had maps to show his world so if your that way inclined…..you can get deep in to the history of the land…..

As for me…the story was so great…it was good enough for me.The land was fictional but every thing was very real….

Only thing i’d hmmm about is the trees……and the eagles……seemed a little too convenient for me although…Tolkien may have had a profound point here that i still don’t see…

What i mean is this….in Fantasy….it seems that just when the hero’s are about to lose, some entity just happens to come along and save them…it’s a sort of….and they all lived happily ever after attitude….

Yes I agree. He did create a whole new world didn’t he. The map is a work of art..you can buy a map of middle earth, which I intend to buy my daughter for Christmas.

The films were a masterpiece. What did you think of  The battle of the Five Armies?

We have the extended versions of all the films. we tend to take them on holiday with us,as well as various kids films…toy story and bugs life.

Well…a lot to comment on here jane…let’s start with Battle of the five armies….

Obviously, many may have expected the Dwarf king to reclaim his land and live happily ever after but he got blinded by the gold and created the war…i mean…all he had to do for one thing was give back the elves their piece of jewellery…..he must have had a corrupt heart at the end of the day….

Funny thing….the dragon had a lust for gold and eventually died so did the dwarf king and eventually died….was it worth it? and  what about Bilbo?…i think to my self…if Bilbo had given Dwarf King the Arken-stone rather than hiding it from him….would that have made Dwarf King think differently?……we shall never know but i wonder if Bilbo meddled too much in the whole affair?
