The title is, of course, from the movie, The Italian Job. It was uttered by sarah Vine, of the Daily mail, to her husband, michael Gove, on leanring that the leave campaign had actually won, rahter than put enormous pressure on Cameron.

What followed was the first stage of what may well be called negotiating an Exit to brexit, though whether it works or not can only be guessed. And it may not even be intended?

But is is a beauty to behold, whether you like it or not. A true beauty of politics as carried on at the highest levels of secrecy, erm sorry government.

The second stage will be called Theresa May and the King’s Singing Horse, but first..

Boris is lionised by the Tory rank and file. If he had stood, he could have been unstoppable.
But he will never, never, ever be forgiven by the Tory grandees for what he has done to Cameron, to our trading economy, and even to the constitutional unity of the Kingdom by his antics.
    So –
first, Rupert Murdoch and Paul Dacre, the editor of the Daily Mail, contact Gove, Boris’s campaign manager, to tell him that they don’t like Boris, don’t trust Boris, and that Boris would destroy the cause Gove holds dear.

Then Heseltine puts a tent peg in Boris’s large skull in an interview condemning his actions as not int the national interest.

Gove thinks, and the next morning announces his candidacy for PM, Boris, half an hour later, looking a bit overwhelmed, says he isn’t running.

Boris out. Gove, who is not telegenic or very popular, is in.

What follows is the Daily Mail throwing its weight behind Theresa May.

Next Kenneth Clark pats Gove on the back, leaving a stiletto blade between the shoulder blades. Really, old chap. aren’t you guilty of student politics, Gove is told, isn’t it best to withdraw in favour of Mrs May in the interests of party unity at such a difficult time?

Whereupon follows Theresa may and the King’s Singing Horse

    of which more anon…
