Rising star Andrew Murray overcame British number one Tim Henman 6-2 5-7 7-6 (7-4) in the first round of the ATP Swiss Indoors tournament.
The match came down to a deciding tie-break and it was Murray who showed superior composure to close it out with his second match point.
Murray seized the first three points of the tie-break before sharing the next six for a 6-3 lead and three match points.
And although Henman saved the first with a whipped forehand down the line, he could do nothing to prevent Murray claiming victory on the second with a volley into an open court.
The young Scot had earlier raced through a spectacularly one-sided opening set in just 34 minutes.
Murray’s returns dominated the Henman serve and he secured breaks in the first and third games of the match for a 3-0 lead before going on to take the set 6-2.
Henman raised his game appreciably at the start of the second set and his improved play was rewarded with a break of serve to lead 3-1.
Murray’s response was to break back immediately to level at 3-3 and more inventive play allowed him to break again in the ninth game for a 5-4 lead.
With Murray serving for the match, Henman produced some vintage tennis to take a 15-40 lead before his opponent conceded the game by netting ill-judged drop-shot.
The narrow escape inspired Henman as he served out to love for a 6-5 lead and then continued to pressurise Murray’s serve for a second successive break and the second set 7-5.
Both players concentrated on securing their serve during a tense deciding set.
Neither man was able to generate a break point opportunity as the match came down to a tie-break in which Murray further enhanced his growing reputation.
