I can only go on my own experience of having both a boy and a girl.
With both of them growing up, I did wonder on an occasion if either of them were gay or not, just a feeling I had at the time, I hope, needless to say, that I wouldn’t have cared one iota. I think all youngsters in some stage in their life wonder about sexuality, but, because of the change in hormones they/we experience.
My daughter being the youngest played with her big brother’s toys – when someone gave her a barbie doll, she snapped its head off – NO I did not think she was thinking she was a boy, even though I found them both in the bath looking for her willy at the age of about 3 and 4.5 – all I thought was, time for seperate baths!! I really don’t know if I am niaive, but my two only knew that one had a willy that made him a boy! The rest of the questions came in dribs and drabs over the years. Children, in my experience, switch off when you have answered what they wanted to know, even before sometimes!!
Going back to what would I do? Go utterly and completely neutral (hair cut, layered, clothes wotever they want to wear etc etc), let HIM talk if HE wants to and do NOT say a word unless asked a question.
Goes without saying – child locks on all drawers and cupboards and no sharp objects within reach!!
And as I have said I would never ever go to a newspaper grrrrrrrrrr it has made me really angry to put it mildly for the innocent! :twisted:
All I can say, is that I cannot really remember being 5, and I definitely would NOT have any idea what my willy, if I had one, was for, apart from peeing! I think my son was around 10’ish when he realised it could ‘do’ different things, and even then he was a bit confused – yeah, I know, he was quite green if everything you read these days is true!, but even at that age, I would NOT have let him have a sex-change. Thinking about it, I reckon around 15/16/17 would be the right age to seek outside help.
The one thing that really upsets me is that is in the papers FGS! :? The repercussions are going to be enormously psychologically upsetting, whatever the outcome :(
ps. As an afterthought, I wonder if the so called sex-education the government have inflicted on young children is a good or bad thing, but that is another topic really, I doubt this little boy had any at his age. Worth a ponder though, because they are getting it from the age of 7 and I think that is far too young!

I was lent a book, which I enjoyed (put down the girly crappy one, to be reinstalled as you don’t need a particularly good memory to work out what is going on – ah, bliss sometimes!) called ‘The Woodcutter’ by Reginald Hill – the beginning is a bit ‘odd’ and I would have put it down if it hadn’t been the fact that it was recommened, which I highly do – good read! Again a who dunnit, did he, didn’t he, keeps you turning those pages!!
Also, this book is part of a book group called bookcrossing.com – quite interesting – if you get given a book with this sticker on it, you put the ID of the book into the website and imput your views on it, and see others’, and also where it has been – anyone else come across this? I would join, but I like keeping the books I read! As I have said, I buy my books from a stall in the local market, but I have told my friends if they see a book with my name in it, it means it is crap and not to buy it! lol
