Steve Wright had no history of violence but he had one conviction for burglary- the police took a DNA swab when arrested and saved that DNA on a national database.
When Steve Wright killed 5 women in a very short space of time, the DNA they found on 4 of them matched with his DNA and he was arrested.
Without this DNA database, it is CERTAIN more women would have died before the police caught him- with the database, they not only caught him but very easily secured a conviction.
I know this has partly been discussed before, but a national database would be a fundamental asset in the detection of crime..and with publicised imporved detection is an automatic reduction in overall crime- FEAR is what stops criminals (thats why the death penalty should be brought back tomorrow) and fear of being caught- make it more likely they’ll get caught and they’ll be less likely to commit the crime
Return the fear to the criminal
A while back I would have thought a Database was a bad idea. It’s kinda hard however to argue with it’s logic when it could catch people like this.

Everyone’s old friends here. They’re all on first name terms with each other.
17 February, 2008 at 7:21 am #312915Certainly a tenner licence would’nt make a difference. It’s only the cost of two packets of fags.
A £100 licence would’nt make a difference. Maybe a £1000 licence would make some people ponder, but if people dont want to stop then they would find the money somehow.Smokers are addicts. I was one. It’s harder to kick smoking than to kick Heroin. To even imagine that a tenner licence would make someone stop is laughable.
15 February, 2008 at 2:08 am #312477I always say Im quitting drinking. Usually on a Sunday Morning after a bucketload the night before.
By the next weekend the wisdom has always gone though. Why stop drinking anyway? Best three things in life are are sex, drink/drugs and food.
14 February, 2008 at 10:54 am #312360A buisness is a buisness. It’s there to make money. Do you really expect the Bookies to tell people that they cant take the bet.
If the guy knew he was addicted, and was losing money, he could have went to Gamblers Anonymous.
Even if the Bookies had knocked him back, Im sure one of their rivals would have happily taken the bet, and the guy would have lost his money anyway.
10 February, 2008 at 3:09 am #311172I dont think you’ve added much to the Old Firm debate there Emma.

Daggs it’s like saying English Football has a Racist problem or a Hooligan Problem.
Both statements would have been true 20 years ago, but they are not true today to the same extent. Both problems have been mostly eridicated.
Maybe bigotry up here hasnt quite been eridicated, but big progress has been made, and within a few more generations it will have been.
You cant honestly say that 60,000 people queue up to watch the clubs because they’re bigots. It’s simply not true.
Get real glasgow is divided catholic or protestant
twinned with belfastYour obviously a frequent visitor to the City and to the two grounds to know what your talking about then.

Love or hate Scottish football, nobody can deny that the Old Firm game has global appeal. Doubtless you’ll try though.
i dont have to try both clubs finances are accrued from religous bigotry
In other words, you can’t deny it so you’re finding another reason to have a dig?
not a dig its a fact
celtic fans rangers fans are bigots the respective clubs make money from the aforementioned bigots
its tantamount to an endorsementSweeping nonsense statement.
Huge strides against Bigotry have been taken. Bigoted or Polictical Songs are banned from both grounds.
You’re honestly saying that 60,000 people go to Home Games because they’re “bigots” when they cant even sing one word of any bigoted song. You’re talking sh/it.
Maybe what you say was true 25 years ago, but not now.
9 February, 2008 at 8:59 pm #311157Celtic and Rangers have more global appeal than the vast majority of English Clubs.
Your team’s forgotten about and rotting in League One anyway Dagger. Your in no position to criticise anyone.
